Steffen Härtel was born in Frankfurt (Germany) and studied physics at the University Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (Frankfurt, Germany), at the Universidad de Córdoba (Argentina), at the Universidad Austral de Chile (Valdivia, Chile), and at the University of Bremen (Germany). He received fellowships of the DAAD and the Bremer Studienfonds. His Ph.D. thesis was honored with summa cum laude and received the ´Bremer Studienpreis´ in combination with the special award of the Bruker Daltonik GmbH. In 2000/2001. He worked as principal investigator at the TZI (Center for Technology and Informatics, Bremen, Germany), financed by the DfG. Between 2001 and 2003, he received a Feodor Lynen Fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany) in combination with a postdoctoral fellowship of CONICET (Argentina) and worked in Bruno Maggio laboratory’s at the CIQUIBIQ (Córdoba, Argentina). In May of 2003, he joined the laboratory of Felipe Barros at the Centro de Estudios Cientificos (CECS, Valdivia, Chile) with a 3-year postdoctoral fellowship financed by FONDECYT. Since 2006, he is leading the Laboratory of Scientific Image Processing (SCIAN-Lab) at the Medical Faculty of the University of Chile as an associated professor. He is a member of the Biomedical Neuroscience Institute (BNI), founder of CEDAI SpA, and director of different research, R&D, and academic programs within biomedical computer science.
