Image Ceremonial of the coronation, anointment and obsequies of the Kings of England (detail) End of 14th Cent. Archivo Real y General de Navarra The accession to the throne implies a set of elements of unique interest, some of which will be the subject of this conference, in the West European framework and with interdisciplinary approach. The Week has been divided in three essential categories in accordance with the inaugural lecture. Firstly, a predominantly ideological and symbolical perspective will be given, intensely bound both to the images that are transmitted and to their meaning and essentially focused on the Carolingian and Ottonian periods. It will be followed by the interest in sacralisation of the royal power and its implications for the accession to the throne, especially in central Middle Ages. An exceptional model is included here, namely the one of the king of Jerusalem. Finally, the analysis will conclude with a variety of aspects related to the desacralisation of the royal power and thus to the management of casual or possible irregularities in the accession to the throne. Each of them will have not more than 10 minutes for a presentation. They may use Power Point slides. The exact rules are to be published on the web page of the Week. PRESIDENT Dña.
