Family members
Introduction
The lesson for this week has many vocabulary that probably you have heard before because is one
of the most common topics when learning English.
When we say “family” we refer to a group of people who are closely connected with us, and it is
important to mention that there are big and small ones. The following vocabulary tree will help you
to identify each member:

As you can notice almost all the words change in gender, and I will give you
more of examples of this asseveration:
Boyfriend
Brother-in-law
Father-in-law
Stepfather
Husband
Godfather
Grandson

In the following examples you will find how we can use the verb “be” with
family words
Using "is"


She is my mother
My mother´s name is Kenny
Using "are"


You are my sister
My sister´s name is Olivia
Using "am"


I am your brother
my brother´s name is Daniel
Use (‘s)
In the previous scheme you can observe that the second sentence in each example has a (´s) after
the noun.
According to the book big picture A1 Unit 3, we use (´s) with names and nouns to show possession
E.g.
Olivia is Daniel´s sister = Olivia is the sister of Daniel
Mary is Katy´s stepmother = Mary is the stepmother of Katy

Check this conversation using the verb “be” and the possessive ´s
A: Harry tell me about your family
B: Well Keisha, I have a very big family. My grandmother´s name is Carmen, my grandfather´s name
is Eduardo. Lily is my mother and Paul is my father. My three sisters are Lucy, Nicky and Elena. I have
six uncles and ten cousins.
A: Oh what a big and interesting family!
B: thank you. Is your family big or small?
A: mmm… I actually have a very small family. My father´s name is Carlos and my stepmother´s name
is Cindy. I have one stepsister, her name is Katlyn.
