“LA CAMPUS PARTY TAMBIÉN ES UN EVENTO DE PRIMER NIVEL MUNDIAL”

Con apenas 30 años, David Iribas es gerente de la empresa Simauria,
que tiene la responsabilidad de dar cobertura de red y asistencia técnica a los seis mil participantes de la 11 edición de la Campus Party, el
mayor evento de entretenimiento electrónico del mundo, que se celebrará en Feria Valencia entre el 23 y el 29 de julio. Sólo hace falta ser
mayor de edad para participar y navegar como un bólido de Fórmula 1,
a cien megas por minuto, por Internet, una red de personas y no sólo
de ordenadores.
At the tender age of 30, David Iribas is manager of the company Simauria, which is responsible for providing network coverage and technical
assistance to some six thousand participants at the 11th Campus Party.
This event, which is the world’s largest electronic entertainment festival, is to be held at Feria Valencia between 23 and 29 July. Participants
need only be 18 or over to participate in the huge human and computer
network with an amazing 100 megas per minute, in addition to a range

¿Es difícil organizar la Campus Party? Es muy complicado a todos los niveles, y a
nivel informático también, porque la gente que viene a participar es experta en ordenadores y en tecnología. La red debe de estar funcionando siempre al cien por cien para
que vivan la experiencia que no pueden vivir en sus casas: estar conectado con seis
mil personas a alta velocidad.
¿Hasta dónde puede crecer la Campus? La única limitación que hay es la de espacio. Ahora ocupamos dos de los nuevos de pabellones de Feria Valencia, y la idea es ir
creciendo.
¿Lo de menos es la informática y lo de más divertirse? Para hacer más real esa leyenda las áreas de contenidos cada año tienen más peso en la Campus Party. Este
año, por ejemplo, viene un robot de Corea: Albert Hubo, que tiene la cara de Einstein;
habrá gente de Finlandia, de Suecia y de todas las partes del mundo para, además de
conectar el ordenador, poder jugar en red, compartir, aprender y vivir la gran experiencia de la Campus.

¿La Sociedad General de Autores ve con
malos ojos la Campus Party? La SGAE
ve con malos ojos casi cualquier cosa
que no controle totalmente: Internet, las
asociaciones culturales, los conciertos
benéficos...
¿Es verdad que lo que predomina son
las descargas de software, música y
cine? Según la Ley de la Propiedad Intelectual española eso no es ilegal porque
no hay ánimo de lucro. De hecho la SGAE
viene todos los años a dar conferencias
y a concienciar sobre el uso responsable
de las nuevas tecnologías. Hay que cambiar el modelo de negocio. No puede seguir siendo el que es porque la gente se
está rebelando contra él, una rebelión en
silencio, sin necesidad de salir en manifestación o con palos. Hay otros modelos
más cercanos a los tiempos que corren
que venderte discos simplemente
Se ha dicho que Barcelona quería quitarle la Campus a Valencia. También
Madrid y unas cuantas ciudades que han
hecho ofertas para llevársela. En 2000
vino a Valencia desde Mollina, en Málaga,
donde se hacía en un polideportivo, y ha
habido una relación muy buena entre la
Campus y la ciudad, apoyada además
por la Generalitat. También es un evento
muy importante, de primer nivel mundial, y hacerla en Valencia tiene muchos
atractivos. La guerra de la sociedad de la

información se libra en pequeñas batallas, y tener la Campus es una batalla ganada.
¿No deja de ser una concentración de internautas? Es como si fuera un macroconcierto, donde la gente va a escuchar música pero también a conocerse y a vivir nuevas
experiencias; a escuchar música desde otro punto de vista, de otra manera. Internet de
banda ancha tienes en tu casa, pero la Campus ofrece experiencias que sólo se pueden
tener allí, con seis mil personas que tienen una pasión muy parecida a la tuya y donde
seguro que vas a encontrar varias almas gemelas. En Internet hay muchos foros donde la gente se conoce virtualmente, y la Campus es una oportunidad para conocerse
personalmente. Muchísimos chateadores se dan cita en Valencia. La leyenda dice que
la tecnología aleja, pero yo soy de la opinión contraria de que la tecnología acerca.
¿O sea que de la Campus salen hasta bodas? Sí, y noviazgos, rupturas y de todo.
¿Cuál es la tarea concreta de Simauria? Nos encargamos de la gestión de la red física
de datos, de la atención de sala a los participantes, y este año vamos a llevar la organización del Área de software libre, una manera distinta de entender el software que
también parte de la idea de que hay que cambiar el modelo de mercado. Igual que se
piratea la música se piratea el Windows.
Is it difficult to organise the Campus Party? It is an extremely complicated process
on all levels, including on an IT level, as the people who participate in the event are
true experts in computers and technology. The network has to provide constant, topquality service in order to ensure that they experience something which cannot be
achieved at home: high-speed connection with six thousand people.
Do you think the Campus Party can grow even further? The only limitation is space.
We are currently situated in the new pavilions at Feria Valencia, and we aim to continue
to grow.
Is the event based more on having fun than on IT? In order to bring more life into the
legend of the Campus Party, every year, we concentrate more on content. For example,
one of the highlights of this year’s events is a robot from Korea: Albert Hubo, which
looks like Einstein. People travel from Finland, Sweden, and from all over the world to
play games within the network, and share and learn, whilst living the unforgettable
Campus Party experience.
Does the General Society of Authors and Editors (SGAE) frown upon the Campus Party? The SGAE frowns upon just about everything that it doesn’t have total control over:
the internet, cultural associations, charity concerts...
Is it true that the main activity at the Party is downloading software, music and films? According to the Spanish Intellectual Property Law, such activities are not illegal if
they are not done for profit. In fact, SGAE attends the event every year to hold conferences and raise awareness concerning the responsible use of new technology. We have
to change the business model. It can’t continue as it is just now, as people are rebelling
against it in a silent uprising, without the need to take to the streets with sticks. There
are other models, other than simply selling discs, which are closer to these times.
There has been talk that Barcelona wanted to steal the Campus Party from Valencia.
Madrid and several other cities have made offers for it, too. It came to Valencia in 2000,
after being held in a sport’s hall in its birthplace of Mollina in Malaga. From the very
beginning, Campus Party struck up a fantastic relationship with Valencia, and is even
supported by the Valencia Regional Government. It is an extremely significant event,
which has become internationally renowned, and holding it in Valencia poses a variety
of attractive advantages. The war of the information society is fought in small battles,
and with the existence of Campus Party, we certainly emerge victorious.
But it still remains a mass of internauts... It’s as if it were a macroconcert, where
people go to listen to music, but also to learn and experience new things; to listen to
music from another perspective, in a different way. Everyone has broadband internet
connection at home, but Campus Party offers the chance to experience something that
can only happen there, with six thousand
people with the same passion as you,
where you are guaranteed to meet soul
mates. The internet is full of chat rooms
where you can meet people online, but
Campus Party offers you the opportunity
to get to know people in person. A huge
number of chatters flock to Valencia for
the event. They say that technology distances people, but I believe the opposite
– technology brings people closer.
So, you’re saying that marriages blossom at Campus Party? Yes, people get
together, break up, everything.
What is Simauria’s main task? We are
responsible for managing the physical
date network, providing assistance in
the event hall, and this year, we are also
organising a free software area as a different way of understanding software,
and as part of the idea that the market
model needs to be changed. Just like
music, Windows is pirated, too.
