Spanish AP Summer Reading
Please remember that admittance to AP Spanish is contingent upon receiving at least an Aaverage in Spanish IV Honors.
You will be reading two short stories written by the Spanish author, Ana María Matute, La rama
seca, and Muy contento. The stories and the information are taken from the book, Obra escojida,
Ana María Matute, publisher, Longman, 1982.
In order to get some background information and historical perspective of Matute’s life, I have
given you two links below.
The first link deals with the Spanish Civil War. The war played a major role in the life of Matute
as she grew up being immersed in its horrors.
The second link is about the Blue and Rose periods of the Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso. These
two periods in the works of Picasso are reflected in Matute’s writing.

Los Cuentos:
La rama seca, páginas 61-66. Respondan a las preguntas de la “Lectura comprensiva” números
1-13, página 67. Del “Comentario del texto” hagan “b.”
Muy contento, páginas 83-87. Respondan a las preguntas
de la “lectura comprensiva” números 1-13, página 89. Del “Comentario del texto hagan “c.”
Para entender la información y los cuentos muy bien es probable que tengan que leerlos tres o
cuatro veces. En el libro hay un vocabulario pero sugiero que compren un diccionario
ingles/español. Durante el año escolar lo necesitarán para el libro y los cuentos que leeremos y
para los ensayos y el diario que escribirán.
