Times staff writer “In less than an hour Ricky Martin sold more than 30,000 tickets for his concert at the Alamodome, which was held on Nov. 6, 2000,” according to Que Onda Magazine, an Hispanic news & entertainment publication. “Ticket scalpers outside the arena were selling concert tickets at $750 each.” On Monday, April 1, another one of Mexico’s well loved singers, Luis Miguel, will perform at the Freeman Coliseum. The Mexican pop crooner will showcase his most recent material, “Mis Romances.” Luis Miguel has been credited by many for helping revive the romantic bolero. Last month, Julio Esparza, Que Onda Magazine publisher and sponsor of the Luis Miguel concert, was asked how the San Antonio Hispanic community is preparing for the popular artist’s performance. “There’s a lot of anticipation among people who are thrilled to attend K E YNT another of Luis Miguel’s concert in the SS K E Alamo City,” Esparza said. “Fans are calling AL Ticketmaster for information on the spring’s Señor Frog’s tries to be hip BY FELIPE G. ARIZOLA JR. Times staff writer How does a club stay hip? Just ask the crew at Señor Frog’s – they’re still trying to figure it out. “It’s a question that has plagued discos ever since way back in the ‘70s,” Rene Alvarado, Carlos N’ Charlie’s general manager/Señor Frog’s director said. “Jazziness comes and goes. A club may have it one minute, then the atmosphere is about as funk-free as a dull CD.” Although Nuevo Laredo has a fickle nightclub scene, Señor Frog’s has a sign of success on weekends – a line at the entrance at midnight. “If you are going to a dance club, you should get there a little after midnight, unless you want the dance floor to yourself,” Alvarado said. “Most of our club regulars get to the club at around that time, except for Thursdays, when $1 gets you a drink, including the fancy ‘diva’ drinks.” Being a native of Cancun, Alvarado knows the workable formula to keep bodies rocking on the dance floor. “Cancun’s clubbers prefer to dance to hip-hop music. That’s all they request,” Alvarado said. “For some reason, Laredoans p r e f e r international or rave music, so we play it. Dance music will make a partyer want to skip a drink and conversation to ALVARADO just… dance.” Alvarado, who collaborates with Señor Frog’s general manager Fabian Cavazos, said, “we had That ‘70s Show event last Friday. We had a wellrounded clientele of patrons in leather and vinyl, too.” The duo admits they have tried everything to hype up the club on weekends, except lower the cost of their drinks. “We’re more interested in keeping our clientele on the dance floor than at the bar,” Cavazos said. Therefore, local self-professed DJs may take their brandspanking new compositions to Señor Frog’s. “Music is universal,” Cavazos said. “We will play any music brought by our customers if the beats sound good.” (Times staff writer can be reached at 728-2567 or may be emailed at Felipe@lmtonline.com.) hottest ticket. A massive number of fans also call our offices for tickets.” Esparza said that following the concert, an “after party” will be held at Planeta Mexico, a popular nightspot. “It’s official,” said Esparza. “The club will host three after-parties in the month of April.” Mexico’s Aleks Syntek and grupo Morbo (whose lead singer is the exMO RBO frontman of the group Moenia) will perform at Planeta Mexico on Friday, April 19. On the following Friday, pop sensation group Kabah will perform on the same stage. Kabah’s performance will feature some of their greatest hits such as “Calle de las Sirenas, “Estare,” “Antro,” and “Al Pasar.” Also at Planeta Mexico, MTV will be holding auditions for the network’s “The Real World,” and/or “Road Rules.” (Felipe Arizola can be reached at 728-2543 or by e-mail at felipe@lmtonline.com.)
