MIGUEL: Hola, soy Miguel del Mundo. Este es mi amigo Sabo. Sabo, as my assistant, you will
need to be able to identify people (la gente), men and women (hombres y mujeres), boys and
girls (niños y niñas).
SABO: Bueno, but where is the list of words I should learn?
MIGUEL: List? You don't need a list. Just keep your eye on my new super-smart people
identifying screen.
MIGUEL: Wow, ¿quién es?
SABO: ¿Un hombre?
MIGUEL: Sí, un hombre. ¿Y esta foto?
SABO: ¿Unos hombres?
MIGUEL: Fantástico, el hombre means man, and los hombres means men.
Por ejemplo: El hombre es alto. The man is tall. Los hombres son altos. The men are tall.
¿Quién es?
SABO: Una mujer. Y en esa foto hay unas mujeres.
MIGUEL: ¡Excellente! La mujer means woman, and the plural, women, is las mujeres. Por
ejemplo: La mujer es baja. The woman is short. Las mujeres son bajas. The women are short.
SABO: So, do you have a photo of "un joven?" That means boy, right?
MIGUEL: Sí, and una joven is used for girl. Remember, you can also say el niño, el chico, or el
muchacho.
SABO: So for girl you would use, la joven, la niña, la chica, or la muchacha?
MIGUEL: ¡Claro que sí! Por ejemplo: For "the boy is seven," say “El joven tiene siete años” or
“El niño tiene siete años.” For "the girl is eleven," say “La joven tiene once años” or “La niña
tiene once años.”
SABO: Más fotos por favor.
MIGUEL: Aquí tengo fotos de unos amigos. Alan es el amigo de Carla. Doris es la amiga de
José.
SABO: I get it, amigo is used for a friend that is a male and amiga is used for a friend that is
female.
MIGUEL: Así es. Novio and novia, which means boyfriend and girlfriend work the same way.
Por ejemplo: Alan es el novio de Carla. Doris es la novia de José. Sabo, ¿Quién es?

SABO: It looks like un bebé, ¿no?
MIGUEL: Sí, a baby. And do you know how to say "the adult"?
SABO: Por supesto, el adulto or la adulta.
MIGUEL: ¡Excellente! ¿Y esta foto?
SABO: Son compañeros, roommates! Alexia es la compañera de Angélica.
MIGUEL: Let's look at some other vocabulary. La gente means people, but you use la persona
when referring to the person. Do you recognize anyone in the photo?
SABO: Hmmm no nadie.
MIGUEL: What do you mean nadie, no one?
SABO: ¿La chica, un chico, una amiga? ¿Someone en esta foto?
MIGUEL: Sí, Sí, ¡Soy yo! That "someone" is me, Miguel del Mundo. For someone, say
“alguien.”
SABO: Muchas gracias for teaching me about la gente.
MIGUEL: What else did you learn?
SABO: el hombre, la mujer, el chico and la chica. Oh, and alguien, y nadie.
