Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
Jesus replied, “This day you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:43
Dear Friends;
As people lay dying, often their priorities are reordered and they come to new realizations. The dying words of
the rulers of this world are very revealing.



As Queen Elizabeth I of England (1533-1603) lay dying wished, “All my possessions for a moment of
time.”
French King Charles IX, who in 1572 ordered the murder of the Huguenot Protestants throughout
France, met death with despair, “What blood! What murders! I am lost forever. I know it.”
Philip III of Spain (1578-1603), an ineffective ruler who ignored the plight of his people, lay dying and
said: “Would to God that I had never reigned. What does all my glory profit but that I have so much
torment in my death?”
In the Gospel of Luke we see in contrast the last words of our Shepherd-King, Jesus.




“…do not weep for me but for yourselves…” –Luke 23:28
“Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.” Luke 23:34
“I assure you this day you will be with me in Paradise.” Luke 23:43
“Father into your hands I recommend my spirit.” Luke 23:46
He did not come in power but came as “one who serves.” He rejected the royal titles people wanted to place on
him. He preferred the titled, “Son of Man” or we might say “I’m one of you.”
Jesus rejects the temptation to be self-serving, “save yourself and come down from the cross.” The only power
that Jesus exercises is the persuasive power of love. He will not lash out in violence. He will not use fear or
coercion. Instead he stands with us in our human mortality. He humbly accepts the reality of his death. In this
he is in solidarity with us in our deepest fear and greatest limitation.
Jesus is not like any king, ruler, president, dictator or potentate that we have known in this world. He redefines
what it means to lead. It means to love and to serve. This is the path that leads to an eternal life of no regrets.
One of the refreshing things about Pope Francis is he is rejecting all the signs of monarchy that have been
attached to the papacy over the last thousand years—red shoes and red cape (imperial colors). He greeted the
cardinals who elected him not on a throne but standing on the same level. He is abolishing renaissance court
ceremonial and ornate court dress. He is trying to eliminate the idea of a court that serves him. He lives in a
simple room like everyone else. He took a bus back to the residence of the cardinals. He is modeling his
ministry on Jesus who “came to serve not to be served.”
Jesus invites us to follow him in his way of humble simplicity, living lives that enrich others and our world.
Jesus invites us to the way of love. And as Pope Francis told the priests of Rome, “If you are going to shepherd
the sheep you will begin to smell like the sheep.” Let us all immerse ourselves in our baptismal call to die to
self and rise to new life in Christ—the life of self-giving love! This is the path to lasting joy in paradise!

Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Rey del Universo
Jesús le respondió:, “Yo te aseguro que hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso.” Lucas 23:43
Queridos Amigos;
Como la gente está muriendo, a menudo recuerdan sus prioridades y llegan a nuevas realizaciones. Las últimas
palabras de los gobernantes de este mundo son muy reveladoras.
• Como la reina Isabel I (primera) de Inglaterra (1533-1603) mientras agonizaba dijo, "Todas mis
posesiones por un momento del tiempo".
• Rey francés Carlos IX, que en 1572 ordenó el asesinato de los hugonotes protestantes en toda Francia,
conoció a muerte con desesperación, ¡"la sangre! ¡Lo asesina! Me he perdido para siempre. Lo sé".
• Felipe III de España (1578-1603), un gobernante ineficaz que ignoro el sufrimiento de su pueblo,
agonizaba y dijo: "quisiera Dios que yo nunca hubiese reinado. ¿Todo mi gloria y beneficio sino que
tengo tanto tormento en mi muerte?"
En el Evangelio de Lucas vemos en contraste las últimas palabras de nuestro pastor-rey, Jesús.
• ".. .No lloren por mí sino por ustedes mismos..."
• "Padre, perdónalos porque no saben lo que están haciendo".
• "Le aseguro que este día será conmigo en el paraíso."
• "Padre en tus manos te recomiendo mi espíritu."

Él no vino en el poder pero vino como "uno que sirve". Rechazó los títulos reales querían colocar en él. Prefería
el título de, "Hijo de hombre" o como nosotros podríamos decir "Yo soy uno de ustedes".
Jesús rechaza la tentación de ser egoístas, "Sálvate a ti mismo y baja de la Cruz". El único poder que ejerce
Jesús es el poder persuasivo del amor. Él no se arremete en violencia. No usará el miedo o la coacción. En su
lugar está con nosotros en nuestra mortalidad humana. Humildemente acepta la realidad de su muerte. Esto es
en solidaridad con nosotros en nuestro temor más profundo y mayores limitaciones.
Jesús no es como cualquier Rey, gobernante, Presidente, dictador o potentado que hemos conocido en este
mundo. Redefine lo que significa conducir, guiar o reinar. Significa amar y servir. Este es el camino que
conduce a una vida eterna de sin arrepentimientos.
Una de las refrescantes cosas sobre el Papa Francisco es que rechaza todos los signos de la monarquía que se ha
adjuntado al papado durante los últimos mil años — zapatos rojos y capa roja (colores imperiales). Saludó a los
cardenales que lo eligieron no sobre un trono, sino que parado frente a ellos en el mismo nivel. Él está
aboliendo las vestimentas renacentistas de corte ceremonial y recargado. Él está tratando de eliminar la idea de
un tribunal que le sirve. Vive en una habitación simple como todos los demás. Toma un autobús de regreso a la
residencia de los cardenales. Él está modelando su Ministerio en Jesús que "vino a servir no para ser servido".
Jesús nos invita a seguirlo en su camino de humilde simplicidad, viviendo vidas que enriquecen nuestro mundo
y los demás. Jesús nos invita al camino del amor. Y como el Papa Francisco dijo a los sacerdotes de Roma, "Si
te vas a ser Pastor de las ovejas comenzarás a oler como las ovejas." Dejémonos sumergir en nuestro llamado
bautismal a morir a uno mismo y levantarse a una nueva vida en Cristo — ¡la vida de amor entrega! ¡Este es el
camino a la felicidad duradera en el paraíso!
