TRAVEL ADVISORY
MAJOR BRIDGE WORK AND TRAFFIC PATTERN
CHANGES BEGIN SPRING 2011
US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) Bridge over Patapsco River
at the Baltimore/ Howard County Line
SHA Work to Extend Life of Heavily-Traveled,
Four-Lane Bridge
The State Highway Administration (SHA) is rehabilitating the
bridge carrying US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) over the
Patapsco River at the Baltimore/Howard County line. The
project begins spring 2011 and will be complete fall 2013,
weather permitting.
Originally constructed in 1936, the four-lane bridge is structurally
safe but requires rehabilitation and partial replacement to
extend its service life. SHA and its contractor will remove and
replace the entire bridge from the concrete arches upward.
Work includes removing and replacing the deteriorated
concrete deck and floor beams, replacing all columns, and
repairing the remaining concrete parts of the bridge.
To minimize impacts to the traveling public, area residents
and businesses, and Patapsco Valley State Park users,
SHA will keep the US 40 river crossing open to motorists
during construction by using two temporary bridges, one on the westbound side and one on the eastbound side of the
existing four-lane bridge. Each temporary bridge will carry two lanes of traffic in the same direction.
Expect Lane Closures and Traffic Impacts
Along with major construction-related traffic pattern changes, there will be two long-term closures of one lane along
westbound US 40 during bridge rehabilitation work. SHA’s contractor will also need to close a lane along eastbound
and westbound US 40 during the day or at night when moving equipment and materials through the work zone or
switching traffic patterns during construction. Pedestrians, cyclists, and park visitors will not be able to use the bridge
or access this area of river during this time. These traffic pattern changes and long-term lane closures will significantly
increase travel time for all motorists traveling along US 40 between Baltimore and Howard counties.
SHA urges citizens to plan ahead for extra travel time along US 40 and consider alternative routes, such as I-70 and MD 144
(Frederick Road), to cross the Patapsco River. If traveling from I-695, drivers may use I-70 to avoid the work zone.
Bridge Work to Begin Spring 2011
• Site work began in February. Work along the roadway approaches and under the bridge is now underway.
It includes installing environment and sediment controls and securing utilities.
• This spring, the first temporary bridge will be built along the westbound side of the US 40 bridge. To build it, SHA will
close the right lane of westbound US 40 to traffic for approximately three to six months.
• Two lanes of westbound traffic will be shifted to the first temporary bridge and the two lanes of eastbound traffic
will be moved to the other side of the existing bridge.
• Crews will then construct the second temporary bridge along the eastbound side of the US 40 bridge. As traffic flows
on the temporary bridges, crews will remove and replace the deck and other parts of the existing bridge.
•
Once rehabilitation is complete, all traffic will be moved back to the newly-rehabilitated bridge, and the contractor will remove the temporary bridges. The right lane of westbound US 40 will be closed to traffic again for approximately three to six months
for the removal of the temporary bridge on westbound US 40. Removal of the second temporary bridge on eastbound US 40 will not require a long-term lane closure.
Work-Zone Safety – Choose Safety for Life!
Plan and be prepared! US 40 is a major highway connecting Baltimore and Howard counties and carries thousands
of motorists each day. SHA may have crews working on the bridge and in the park area during the day and at night.
Stay alert for equipment being moved in and out of the work zone. Drive safely at the appropriate speed limit
through the work zone - the bridge travel lanes will be narrow and crews may shift traffic at any given time. Use
extra caution for worker safety and your own. Remember - approximately 85 percent of work-zone crashes cause
injury or death to those traveling the highway.
