Arthur is so worried that no one will come to his birthday party since Francine scheduled her
birthday party on the same day. Birthday party invitations are an important part of a child’s life.
Writing or drawing an invitation is writing with a purpose that every child can understand. Help
your child make a creative invitation to practice reading and writing.
What your child will do
Design a birthday invitation inviting all of Arthur’s friends to his party.
What you need
•The book - Arthur’s Birthday by Marc Brown
•Construction paper
•Birthday stickers
•Pencils
•Markers or crayons
•Scissors
What you do
1. Talk about what you need to write on the invitation.
2. Design the invitation using any theme.
3. Write names and addresses on the envelopes.
4. Deliver your invitation to friends or family members by mail or in person.
Questions to ask
What kind of information do you need to put on the invitation? What theme do you want to create to
make people want to come? Who do you want to invite? Who do you think Arthur would want to invite?
For parents
Talk to your child about his experiences with birthday parties and invitations. Your child can learn
about invitations and the importance of reading and writing to give and get the correct information. This
activity will encourage your child to communicate with family and friends that live in town and far away.
Talk about the process of putting stamps on the invitations and what happens after they get mailed.
