First Day of Class Uniform Change Bell Schedule Change Monday

Dear Parents/Guardians,
We look forward to the 2012-2013 school year. Below you will find important updates and information
regarding the start of school.
First Day of Class
Monday, August 27th is your first day back! On this day, parents and students will both attend an
orientation for about two hours. Student and parent attendance is mandatory. You will meet your
advisor, receive schedules, and review the school year. Students will not be permitted to start school
until you have both attended orientation. You may choose to attend one of the following sessions:
 7:30 AM
 9:00 AM
 12:30 PM
 3:00 PM
Students must come in uniform. Remember, ECHS shirts are available for purchase at Cactus Threads
on 167th and Hawthorne. Please order ahead of time to ensure proper attire for the first day of school!
Uniform Change
The ECHS uniform has changed! Students will be permitted to wear their existing uniform shirts;
however, new uniform shirts with our modified ECS logo will be available in different colors.
Bell Schedule Change
Our bell schedule has changed! Class will run during the following times this year, including an 8:00
a.m. start on Mondays** and a 9:00 a.m. late start on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Staff Changes
This year we are sad to say goodbye to Mrs. DeLaRosa, Ms. George, Mr. Makar, Mr. Morrissey, and Mr.
Osterweil. These teachers have moved on to new and exciting opportunities (locally, nationally, and
abroad!). We thank them all for their contributions and wish them well in their upcoming journeys.
We are excited to welcome the following new staff members to our dynamic team:
 Monica Jara: Counselor
 German Gallardo: US History Teacher
 Christian Hernandez: Physics and Biology Teacher
 Samantha Sindoris: Green Ambassadors Teacher
 Naomi Tuinstra: Chemistry Teacher
Additionally, Sara Diaz and Mike Pack will join us full time to teach Spanish 2 and Horticulture!
School Site Council
Our School Site Council continues this year with leadership from the following parents and community
members: Shirlene Bauer-Maheia, Kari Bell, Eduardo DeAnda, Rhonda Gorman, Elda Lugo, Theo Spence,
and Philip Williams. Meetings this year will take place on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 5:00
p.m., beginning September 25th. We invite you to introduce yourselves to our Site Council
representatives, who will have an informational table set up on August 27th.
ECHS has fundraising opportunities with Fresh and Easy again this year. Please collect Fresh and Easy
grocery receipts totaling $20 or more for purchases made between 9/1/12 and 12/31/12 and deposit
them in the collection box in the school office. Also, on Thursday, October 11, 2012 from 4pm-8pm we
will have a shopping night from which ECHS will receive 5% of all sales at the Rosecrans location in
Manhattan Beach. We need a minimum of 5 adult volunteers to help with the event. Students may also
sign up to help bag groceries and collect shoppers’ receipts while earning volunteer hours. Sign up to
volunteer on the first day of school. Last year we raised over $900, let’s try to double that (or more) this
year!
Field Trips, Fundraisers, Donations
As you know, we again face severe budget cuts to education. Unfortunately, this has led us to
placing a hold on our multi-day outdoor education trips, including Catalina Island. We are very
disappointed, and hope for better economic times in the near future. We will continue to
collect your $100 donations this year, to help with other field trips and school-sponsored
activities throughout the school year.
Open Door Policy
The ECHS culture is one of collaboration, openness, and learning. If you have any questions, comments,

Queridos Padres/Tutores
Con gusto esperamos dar comienzo al año escolar 2012-2013. A continuación encontrará las
actualizaciones importantes y la información sobre el comienzo de la escuela.
Primer Día de Clase
¡El lunes 27 de agosto es su primer día de regreso! En este día todo los padres como los
estudiantes asistirán a una orientación de aproximadamente 2 horas. Es obligatorio que asistan
los estudiantes y los padres. Usted se reunirá con su asesor, recibirá los horarios, y analizará el
año escolar. A los estudiantes no se les permitirá iniciar la escuela hasta que ambos hayan
asistido a la orientación. Ustedes tienen que asistir a una de las siguientes sesiones:

Cambios de Personal
¡Este año estamos tristes de decir adiós a: la señora DeLaRosa, la señorita George, el Sr. Makar,
el señor Morrissey, y el Sr. Osterweil. Estos profesores se han movido buscando nuevas y
emocionantes oportunidades (local, nacional, y en el extranjero!). Les damos las gracias a todos
por sus contribuciones y les deseamos lo mejor en sus futuros proyectos.
Nos da gusto dar la bien venida a los siguientes miembros de nuestro equipo dinamico:

Consejo Escolar
El comité ECHS School Site Council continúa este año con el liderazgo de los siguientes padres
y miembros de la comunidad: Shirlene Bauer-Maheia, Kari Bell, Eduardo DeAnda, Rhonda
Gorman, Elda Lugo, Theo Spence, y Philip Williams. Las reuniones de este año se llevarán a
cabo en el cuarto martes de cada mes a las 5:00 p.m., a partir del 25 de septiembre. Le
invitamos para presentarse con nuestros representantes del Consejo, quienes tendrán una mesa
informativa el 27 de agosto.
Vamos a tener una noche de compras en la cual ECHS recibirá 5% del total de ventas en la
tienda Fresh and Easy de la localidad de Rosecrans en Mahattan Beach de 4 a 8 p.m.
Necesitamos un mínimo de cinco voluntarios adultos para ayudar en este evento. Los
estudiantes también se pueden inscribir para ayudar a empacar las compras y juntar los recibos
de los compradores, al mismo tiempo acumula sus horas de voluntario. Inscríbase como
voluntario el primer día de clase. El año pasado recaudamos mas de $900, intentemos doblar

Como usted sabe, una vez más enfrentamos severos recortes presupuestarios a la educación.
Desafortunadamente, esto nos ha llevado a poner un alto a nuestros viajes de varios días de
educación al aire libre, entre ellos la isla Catalina. Estamos muy decepcionados, pero con la
esperanza de una mejor situación económica en un futuro cercano. Vamos a continuar
recogiendo sus donaciones de $ 100 este año, para ayudar con las excursiones y actividades
patrocinadas por la escuela durante el año escolar.
