John Melmer for 22 years Fr. Juan Puigbo for 12 years Fr. Jeb Donelan for 2 years Fr. Stephen Ogoe for 6 years “There was a clear sense that what I heard in my heart was no human voice, nor was it just an idea of my own. Christ was calling me to serve him as a priest.” ~ Pope John Paul II (Los Angeles, September 14, 1987) A Message from our Pastor, Fr. Bob Cilinski “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” ~ Luke 18:14 My dear parishioners, The parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector reminds us that God hears the prayers of some surprising people and that we all must approach God in prayer with humility. We find in the Bible a conviction that God gives special consideration to the prayers of the oppressed and needy and to those who seem least important in society. The Pharisee’s prayer was not heard because he exalted himself. His prayer was focused on himself and being better than the tax collector. Whose prayer does God hear? If our prayer is like that of the Pharisee, our prayer will not be heard. If our prayer turns us to God realizing our need of God’s mercy and justice, then God will hear our prayer because it is made in a spirit of humility. During the next week we will celebrate our parish feast day … All Saints Day! We are all called to be saints. We are sinners and would be saints. We rejoice in all the holy men and women who now share in the victory of heaven. On All Souls Day, November 2nd, we will pray for our beloved dead and remember them with love. Happy Feast Day! All Saints Day ~ Friday, November 1st Our parish’s patronal feast, The Solemnity of All Saints, is Friday, November 1st. The Mass schedule is as follows: Thursday, October 31st ~ Vigil Mass at 5:30pm 7:00am, 8:30am, 10:00am (School Mass), 12:00 noon, 5:30pm and 7:30pm in Spanish. All Souls Day The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed Saturday, November 2nd Each year All Souls Day is a day of special prayer for all those who have died. We pray that those souls in need of perfection may swiftly pass through their purification and come into the presence of God. It is a grace of the Communion of Saints that we can have this special relationship of prayer with those who have departed this life. The Mass schedule for All Souls Day is as follows: 8:00am and 5:30pm Mass of Remembrance Monday, November 4th at 7:00pm Love and blessings, Fr. Bob Cilinski Pastor The Book of Remembrance is in the Church near the baptismal font and Paschal candle during the month of November in memory of our beloved dead. All are invited to place the names of loved ones who have died in our Book of Remembrance with faith in the resurrection that Jesus promises us. “the harvest is great; the workers, few…” Do you wonder what you can do in our community to assist our less fortunate neighbors? The All Saints Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society responds to calls for assistance in Manassas and Manassas Park. Our success depends on your generosity, relies on your prayers, and needs your help. Call: (571) 264-5750 or (703) 626-1833 to learn more about how you can participate. One of our most beloved traditions at All Saints Parish occurs every year during the month of November. This is the month when the whole Church remembers those who have passed from this world, in hope of eternal life. At All Saints we celebrate a special Mass for those of our parish family who have died in the past year. We wish to invite your family and friends to this special Eucharist. This special Mass will take place on Monday, November 4th at 7:00pm. Please know that you are in our prayers and in the prayers of the community of All Saints. All Saints Bethany Food Pantry The Bethany Food Pantry is off to a great start, having recently opened its doors on October 4th. The pantry’s shelves quickly empty each Tuesday and Friday as we assist those in need of food. We count on the parishioners of All Saints Church for our stock. Please continue to bring your non-perishable food items each Sunday and place your bags in the collection bins that are located at each door into the church. Thank you for your generosity. For more information, please contact Vickie at bethanyfoodpantry@allsaintsva.org. Civic Virtue and Voting in Virginia October 2013 Tuesday, November 5, is Election Day. Every year at this time, we issue a letter to urge the parishioners of our dioceses to vote, and to do so with a well-formed conscience. We renew that call now. In our letter last October, we shared a three-part framework, reprinted below, that we believe is essential for the correct formation of conscience. We invite you to consider this framework prayerfully as you prepare to make important decisions in this November’s elections and on many other occasions. • Many issues are important. “Every human being has a right to life, the fundamental right that makes all other rights possible, and a right to access to those things required for human decency – food and shelter, education and employment, health care and housing, freedom of religion and family life.” Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, para. 49. This consistent ethic of life provides the proper moral foundation for our engagement in political life. As Catholics, we must seek the best ways to respond to the many needs of our neighbors, at every stage of life and in every condition. Indeed, we must be attentive to all issues that affect human life and dignity and the common good. • Not all issues have equal moral weight. Some practices are intrinsically evil – that is, always incompatible with love of God and neighbor. “[T]he moral obligation to oppose intrinsically evil acts has a special claim on our consciences and our actions.” Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, para. 37. Examples include abortion (which occurs more than a million times each year in the U.S.), euthanasia, human cloning, destructive research on human embryos, genocide, torture, racism, and the targeting of noncombatants in acts of terror or war. Not all of these issues occur in the context of the present election, but many, such as abortion, do. It is also essential to note that God is the author of marriage, and therefore marriage has a built-in design and purpose that cannot be redefined. The institution of marriage, rooted in the natural law, is integral to the common good because it is the building block of the family and society. • When the issue is whether to protect or deny the fundamental right to life, it outweighs other matters. Among acts that are intrinsically evil, those that directly attack life itself, the clearest example of which is abortion, are the foremost violations of human dignity. The right to life is the foundation upon which all other human rights are based and without which no other right could possibly exist. The right to life is indeed our first right, and protecting life to the maximum degree possible must be our highest priority. For additional resources on conscience formation and faithful citizenship, please visit the Virginia Catholic Conference’s website (www.vacatholic.org). This site includes responses to the Conference’s survey of candidates in Virginia’s races for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and contested House of Delegates seats. As Americans and Virginians, civic engagement is our duty. As Catholics, it is also a requirement of our faith. Faithfully Yours in Christ, Most Reverend Paul S. We are only temporary travelers on earth. By asking us to pray this particular prayer, Jesus helps us to keep our eyes on our home where our Father waits patiently for us. Reminder: Political Campaign Activities As the November elections approach, it it is a good time to review our Diocesan Policies regarding political activities on Church property. A more complete discussion of these policies is available online at VCC Political Activity Guidelines. A few principles to keep in mind: • Distribution of partisan campaign literature (e.g. leaflets, bumper stickers, etc.) on Church property is not permitted. If you discover someone engaging in such activity, politely ask them to stop and escort them off the property. If they will not comply with a polite request, the police (or sheriff) may be called to assist. • Candidates for political office may not be endorsed or opposed, either at Mass or through any official Church channel. • Voter guides or election-related materials other than those prepared by Bishop Loverde, the Virginia Catholic Conference or the USCCB, may not be distributed. If you become aware of any violations of our diocesan policies on political activity, please inform the Chancellor’s office at (703) 841-2524.
