Jubilee Year of Mercy
How can we show others the mercy of God? We say
that God is compassionate, but we ignore the poor. We
say that God loves us and has mercy on us, but we
hold grudges against our friends. Our actions need to
authentically reflect God's mercy. The Corporal
Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus
and give us a model for how we should treat all others,
as if they were Christ in disguise. They "are charitable
actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily
needs" (USCCA). They respond to the basic needs of
humanity as we journey together through this life. The
seven Corporal Works of Mercy will be listed over the
next several weeks. After each work of mercy there
will be suggestions and words of advice for living
them out in our daily lives.
cotidiana.
Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions of the Month
Universal Intention: That all may experience the
mercy of God, who never tires of forgiving

sign of certain hope.

Aging religious need your help. In the United States today, there are more than 33,000 senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. These religious worked tirelessly in Catholic schools, hospitals,
and agencies, usually for little to no pay. As a result, many religious communities lack adequate savings for
retirement and eldercare. Your gift to today’s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide
medications, nursing care, and more. Please be generous.

Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee
ADVENT PENANCE SERVICES
Lord Jesus Christ,
you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly
Father,
and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him.
Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from
being enslaved by money;
the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things;
made Peter weep after his betrayal,
and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to
each one of us, the words that
you spoke to the Samaritan woman:
“If you knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the
invisible Father,
of the God who manifests his
power above all by forgiveness
and mercy:
let the Church be your visible
face in the world, its Lord risen
and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also be clothed
in weakness
in order that they may feel compassion for those in
ignorance and error:
let everyone who approaches them feel sought after,
loved, and forgiven by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with
its anointing,
so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace
from the Lord,
and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may
bring good news to the poor,
proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed,
and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of
Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and
the Holy Spirit for ever and
ever.
Amen.

Discussion Questions
Third Sunday of Advent
December 13, 2015
First Reading / Zephaniah 3:14-18a
1. “He will sing joyfully because of you.” This sentence
paints a picture. What are some examples in the world
about which you might say, “Listen! God is singing!”?
2. “Be not discouraged! The Lord, your God, is in your
midst.” This First Reading says it twice. Have you ever
remembered the presence of God in the middle of a crisis? What effect did it have on you?
Thank you for helping to brighten Thanksgiving for the many families that depend upon
Loving Food Resources for healthy food that
they couldn't otherwise afford to get. Your
generous donations of 297 pounds of food
for our November collection helped Loving
Food Resources serve all those who needed
assistance from them. Their clients are particularly vulnerable and your donations
helped them have healthy choices for their
meals.
Let us repeat our generosity in December so
that they may enjoy another holiday
time with healthy choices. Please bring non
perishable food and place it in the collection
baskets in the Narthex during the weekend
of December 19 & 20.
Please share the Christmas spirit with those
facing difficult times and struggling with serious health issues.
Thank you for your generosity.
Paul LeSchack, Caring Hearts Chairperson
Second Reading / Philippians 4:4-7
1. St. Paul says we must rejoice in the Lord always, be
kind to all, lose anxiety, make our requests known to
God and thank God as though he has already granted
the requests. This is a long list. Are you better at some
than others? Which ones could you improve on?
2. Maybe you rejoice when you are singing at Mass on
Sunday. Are there other times during the week that you
experience this kind of joy? What makes you happy in
the Lord?
Gospel / Luke 3:10-18
1. What kind of people went to hear John and then repented? Would you show up to hear someone like John
today? What would you want to see and hear? Can people be prophets even though their looks or behavior are
a departure from the norm? Do you know any prophets?
Discuss.
2. Rita Ferrone has made the following comparison. Can
you see the similarities?
And the crowds asked him “What then should we do?”
And [the Baptist] said to them in reply, “Whoever has
two cloaks should share with the person who has none.
And whoever has food should do likewise.” Even tax collectors came to him to be baptized and they said to him,
“Teacher, what should we do?” (Gospel)
And the crowds asked Pope Francis, “What then should
we do?” To the pastors he said “Get out of the sacristy!
Go and be with your people; smell like your sheep!” To
the wealthy nations he said, “Give up your trickle down
economic theories! Address the injustices that hold the
poor in bondage.” To the religious he said “Answer the
questions of the CDF*, but don’t let their investigations
dismay you. Continue in your ministry!” (Expansion of
Pope Francis’ talk)
