El se impersonal (p. 249)
• When speaking in English, we often say “they do (something),” “you do
(something),” “one does (something),” or “people do (something)” to talk about
people in general. In Spanish, you can also talk about people in an impersonal or
indefinite sense. To do so, you use se + the Ud./él/ella or the Uds./ellos/ellas
form of the verb.
Se venden videos aquí.
They sell videos here.
Se pone el aceite en la sartén.
You put (One puts) oil in the frying pan.
In the sentences above, note that you don’t know who performs the action. The
word or words that come after the verb determine whether the verb is singular
or plural.
A. First, underline the impersonal se expression in each sentence. Then, write the letter
of the English translation that might be used for it from the list below. Follow the model.

• When the word following the conjugated verb in an impersonal se expression is an
infinitive, the verb form is singular.

form of the first verb and the infinitive of the second verb. Follow the model.
