Manuel Antonio Garretón M. Born in Santiago, Chile, May 23rd 1943. Sociologist. Graduated at Universidad Católica de Chile. Ph.D. at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris. Has been director of several academic institutions, taught in foreign and national universities and adviser of national and international public and prívate institutions. Main research and teaching themes with participation in academic and public debate: democratizations and transitions, State and Society, authoritarianism and democracy, political parties, university and society, gender, culture and education, social movements and actors, social sciences development, public opinion and social demands, Latin American sociological theory, modernity and modernization. Has published more than 300 articles in different languages and more than 40 books as author, co-author or editor.
