PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I saw this reflection in Bringing Home the Word published by Ligouri Publications
and wanted to share it with you.
SLOWING DOWN FOR GOD
“A great prophet has arisen in our midst.” Luke 7:11-17
I’ve been teased over the years about how fast I walk. A work colleague even
named me Flash for running by his office “in a flash” every day. He claimed no one
wanted to get in my way for fear of being run over. I do walk quickly, and it probably has to do with my predilection for getting a lot done in little time. I’m all about
efficiency.
But in my single-minded focus, I can miss opportunities to connect, help, or simply be present to someone – a colleague, my spouse, or even a stranger. When I take
the time to stop, I have remarkable moments of holy companionship.
Jesus, while not necessarily a divine speed walker, was heading into Nain in today’s Gospel, probably with a particular destination in mind. He could have easily
walked by the passing funeral procession. But Jesus was deeply moved by this grieving widow. Jesus not only interrupts His plans – He touches the woman’s dead son,
rendering Jesus ritually unclean.
Yet this risky action brings life – not just to the man, but also to his mother, whose
legal standing in society was dependent on her son’s. Her life is also restored.
Jesus actions remind us that while our plans and projects are good, God is regularly found in interruptions – if we’re willing to stop and risk reaching out. Instead of
speeding past the homeless man, might we stop and invite him for a sandwich? Instead of deftly avoiding who always has family problems to share, might we take
time to listen with real empathy?
Let the interruptions come – God may be bringing new life to someone through
you.
“When I take the time to stop, I have remarkable moments of holy companionship.”
Questions for Reflection:
What distracts me from my relationship with God?
How might God be speaking to me through the interruptions in my life?

FAITH BUILDING
WHAT’S WRONG WITH TAKING GOD’S
NAME IN VAIN?
Misusing
God’s
name doesn’t make
Him less wonderful,
awesome or powerful
but it can diminish Him
in others’ view. Instead,
Jesus tells us to say,
“Our Father who art in
heaven, hallowed be thy name” Matthew 6:9.
One way we respect God is by respecting
His name. God gave us His name so we could
approach Him. “The gift of a name belongs to
the order of trust and intimacy … For this reason man must not abuse it” (Cathecism of the
Catholic Church, #2143). Today, there is hardly
a movie or television show that doesn’t use His
name as a swear word. Yet for the ancient
Jews, God’s name was considered so holy it
was unspeakable. Instead they addressed Him
as Adonai, which means “LORD.”
How we use God’s name tells others what
we believe about Him. Do we think He can’t
hear when we misuse it? If we believe God is a
loving Father who responds when we call Him,
we will use His name differently.
Couples For Christ (CFC) is a private international association of the faithful pontifical right recognized by the Pontifical Council for the Laity. It is
driven by its global vision of “Families in the Holy
Spirit renewing the face of the earth.” and sustained
by its core values of “Pro-God, Pro-Family, Pro-Life,
and Pro-Poor”. Its members are called to serve the
Lord in 3 areas, global evangelization; family renewal; and church renewal within the Catholic
Church.
Membership in CFC begins with the completion
of a Christian Life Program (CLP), which is an integrated course that leads the participants into a renewed understanding and response to God’s call to
them.
This CLP is made available to parishes and
groups of married couples who wish to live out their
Christian life in active and supportive relationships
with one another. CFC also has renewal programs
that reach out to different members of the family.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN
Don’t just rely on “reputation” of summer
programs, but seek information
Sometimes parents rely on the reputation of
a particular summer program from past years to
determine whether they allow their children to
participate. These historical perspectives from
other parents and young people should always
be a factor to consider in the decision making
process, but if you find that the monitoring and
screening processes in place are inadequate to
assure your child’s safety, do not let the
“reputation” of the program or its apparent success be the guiding principle for whether your
children are allowed to participate.

PÁGINA 6
MINISTERIO HISPANO

padres – vivos y difuntos.

Bendiciones, Diacono Carlos

JUNE 11 AND 12
Next weekend all parishes throughout the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles will be asked to
give generously to support the Retirement Fund
for Archdiocesan Priests.
Currently, the fund provides for more than
100 priests who are retired. Over the next ten
years, that number is expected to increase significantly. With minimal compensation, and in
many cases, no pension, these men often retire
with nothing to fall back upon. Your contributions can change that.
The Priest Retirement Fund offers us a way
to give back to our Catholic priests who have
served us so faithfully. Your contribution will
help archdiocesan priests live modestly and
peacefully in retirement. Help us offer thanks
for their years of devotion to God, and faithful
service to our parish communities.

As in years past, we will
offer a Novena of Masses
