PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
“They made themselves a molten calf … worshipping it …” Exodus 32:8
It is easy to fall into worshipping false gods like satanism, power, pleasure,
race, money, superstitions, horoscopes, Ouija boards and many others. The
Lord calls us to leave all this and embrace Him, the Only God. Jesus Christ
comes to free us from all these lies.
“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” 1 Timothy 1:15
In today’s Gospel, we see this in the prodigal son. He made his god a life of
dissipation. But the grace of God called him back to his dignity.
“Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you …” Luke 15:21
Our merciful Father receives us as He does the prodigal son with love
when we acknowledge our sins.
“He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him …” Luke 15:20
May the Saints encourage us to overcome all temptations.
Monsignor Lorenzo Miranda

FAITH BUILDING
“WHERE IS GOD WHEN I
NEED HIM MOST?”
Two men, upset over the murder of a friend,
were walking to the next town. Along the way,
they struggled to understand how such a thing
could happen and worried that God had abandoned them.
A stranger who was
also walking to the same
Trust in God is often town joined them, heard
hardest when it is their conversation, and explained how the recent
most necessary. events could be seen as
part of God’s plan. At dinner that night, the stranger
miraculously turned out to be the very friend
they were grieving. Though they didn’t realize it,
God was walking with them (Luke 24).
Sometimes, events or experiences in our
lives can lessen our awareness of God and
make Him appear distant. As a result, we can
become too worried, too sad, or too angry to
find Him. For example, preoccupied by grief, the
two friends on the road failed to recognize God
walking right next to them.
Trust in God is often hardest when it is most
necessary. The truth is that He is always with us
whether we “feel” it or not. He promised that He
would never abandon us, and God always
keeps His promise.
“… All things work for good for
those who love God, who are called
according to His purpose” (Romans
8:28).

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY
SEPTEMBER 18
“PRAYER: THE FAITH PRAYED"
This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday, on September 18 and will focus on the theme "Prayer: The Faith Prayed."
Those who the Community has designated
to serve as catechists will be called forth to be
commissioned for their ministry.
Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person
plays, by virtue of
Baptism, in handing on the faith
and being a witness to the Gospel.
Catechetical
Sunday is an opportunity for all to
rededicate themselves to this mission as a
community of faith.

Mary, Jesus’ mother, also was distraught by
His death. Yet instead of being overwhelmed by
it, she stood with dignity at the foot of His cross.
She acted on the faith that God would prevail.
And her reward for her faith in His promise was
amazing.

St. John, named Chrysostom
(golden-mouthed) on account of his
eloquence, came into the world to
Christian parents, about the year
344, in the city of Antioch.
His mother, at the age of 20,
was a model of virtue. He studied
rhetoric under Libanius, a pagan,
the most famous orator of the age.
In 374, he began to lead the life
of an anchorite in the mountains
near Antioch, but in the year 386
the poor state of his health forced
him to return to Antioch, where he
was ordained a priest.
In 398, he was elevated to the See of Constantinople and became one of the greatest lights of
the Church.
But he had enemies in high places and some
were ecclesiastics, not the least being Theophilus, Patriarch of Alexandria, who repented of this
before he died.
His most powerful enemy, however, was the
empress Eudoxia, who was offended by the apostolic freedom of his discourses.
Several accusations were brought against
him in a pseudo-council, and he was sent into
exile. In the midst of his sufferings, like the apostle, St. Paul, whom he so greatly admired, he
found the greatest peace and happiness. He had
the consolation of knowing that the Pope remained his friend, and did for him what lay in his
power.
His enemies were not satisfied with the sufferings he had already endured, and they banished him still further, to Pythius, at the very extremity of the Empire. He died on his way there
on September 14, 407.

cristianos,

Tu no serás tentado,
Tu no estarás preocupado,
Tu no estarás afligido,
Pero si dijo:
Tu no serás derrotado …”
