¿Qué tipo de prueba se ha hecho hoy?
Hoy le hicimos un tamiz neonatal auditivo a su bebé. Incluyó una evaluación
de emisiones otoacústicas de respuesta evocada que mide el funcionamiento
del oído interno. También hicimos una evaluación de respuesta auditiva
automatizada del tronco encefálico para medir la respuesta del nervio
auditivo de su niño. Todo mientras su bebé dormía.
¿Por qué es necesaria esta prueba?
El tamiz neonatal auditivo se hace a los recién nacidos en todos los hospitales
obstétricos del estado. Su bebé puede no haber recibido esta prueba antes de
haber sido transferido a Seattle Children’s. El Departamento de Salud del estado
de Washington recomienda esta prueba para todos los bebés y Seattle Children’s
adhiere a estas recomendaciones. Una buena audición es importante para que su
niño desarrolle el habla y el lenguaje. Con demasiada frecuencia la pérdida
auditiva se descubre cuando el niño ya tiene algún retraso en el habla y el
lenguaje. Es por eso que le hicimos esta prueba a su bebé.

¿Qué debo hacer ahora?
Como el tamiz auditivo de su bebé no salió normal, necesita más evaluaciones
para saber cómo está su audición. Es una prueba más larga y más complicada
que ayudará a determinar cómo escucha su bebé. Debe hacerse antes de los 6
meses. Llame al 206-987-5173 y escoja la opción 1 para pedir la cita. Si desea
que la evaluación se haga en otro lugar que no sea Seattle Children's, en la

What type of testing was done today?
Today we gave your baby an infant hearing screening. This included an
Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions Evaluation. This measures how well the inner
ear works. We also did a Brainstem Auditory Evoked Evaluation. This test
measures how well your child’s hearing nerve responded to sound. We did the
testing while your baby was sleeping.
Why was this test needed?
Hearing screening is being performed on newborns at all birthing hospitals
in the state. Your baby may not have received this screening before being
transferred to Seattle Children’s. The Washington Department of Health
recommends this screening for all infants and Seattle children’s adheres to these
recommendations. Good hearing is important for your child to learn speech
and language. Too often, a hearing loss is not found until a child already has a
speech or language delay. This is why your baby’s hearing was tested today.
Screening results
Your baby did not pass the hearing screening.
What do I need to do now?
Because your baby did not pass the hearing screening, your baby needs
further testing to help better determine how they hear. This should be done
before your baby is 6 months old. Please call 206-987-5173 and chose option 1
to schedule this appointment. Please see the attached sheet for Audiology
clinic recommendations if you wish to schedule the evaluation at a clinic
other than Seattle Children’s.
