Summary of CV
This section describes briefly a summary of your career in science, academic and research; the
main scientific and technological achievements and goals in your line of research in the medium
-and long- term. It also includes other important aspects or peculiarities.
Dr. Pérez Ruiz acquired her university education mainly focused on classical archaeology,
with high undergraduate grades in History (3.06 out of 4) and one-year undergraduate stay in
Rome with an Erasmus grant. During her PhD work, she specialized in the Roman domestic
space and its religious manifestations in Hispania and throughout the Roman world. Her PhD
dissertation was qualified with summa cum laude unanimously and mention of European
doctorate (13 publications derived from it).
Her postgraduate studies were supported by fellowships, standing out a four-year doctoral one
(FPU fellowship from the Spanish MEC) that allowed her to carry out her research in Spain
and renowned foreign centers (Deutsches Archäologisches Institut in Berlin, Università della
Sapienza di Roma). During this period, she was able to create a network of contacts with
researchers from other countries, which was increased in the postdoctoral period with other
institutions, most notably the Cambridge University.
As a result of her research work she has published 8 articles in journals, a book (Al amparo
de los Lares), 13 chapters in books and has acted as editor or co-editor in five books.
She has also participated in national (6) and international (7) conferences, outstanding the
SOMA, AIAC and Tarraco Biennial; likewise she has organized two research seminars and
given talks and divulgation lectures.
She is currently a postdoctoral researcher attached to the Catalan Institute of Classical
Archaeology as part of its research team "Archaeometry and Artistic Productions (ArPA)" and
to the consolidated research group "Glances on the Antique Mediterranean. Occident to Orient,
from the Early History to Late Antiquity (MIRMED / GIAC)". She is also currently a member of
the research team " Marmora Hispaniae. Exploitation, use and dissemination of the Espejón
limestone in Roman Hispania and Late Antiquity".
She has taught at UAM as lecturer on various subjects of Archeology and Art History (103
hours) and has acted as coordinator of a course. She is currently assistant professor at
the Universidad Isabel I de Castilla, where she teaches on-line courses of the degree in
History and Geography and of the Master on High School Teacher Training, and acts as
supervisor of TFG and TFM practical works (36 ECTS until present). She has participated as
a visiting lecturer at graduate and postgraduate courses and seminars, organized by several
universities (Cambridge University, UNED, CEU) and research centers (CSIC). She has
improved her teacher training by following specific courses. She has obtained accreditations
as Assistant Teacher-Doctor (2012), Contracted Professor-Doctor (2015) and Professor of
Private University (2015) by the Spanish ANECA.
She has worked in historic divulgation as a coordinator of two exhibitions and currently
she is the assistant curator at the exhibition "Scipio: Rome conquered Hispania" (Regional
Archaeological Museum of Madrid, to be opened in February 2016).
Currently she is interested in household space and life in Roman times as a whole and
particularly on related beliefs. The work on this research subject, in coordination with other
researchers, aims to understanding this space in its complexity of familiar, social and

ideological messages from the archaeological materiality. In order to consolidate a research
team devoted to this topic, a scientific meeting was organized last autumn at the UNED.

Applicability in teaching and/or research: Thanks to a thorough training in teaching of more than
100 hours and ten different subjects, I have been able to learn teaching techniques and improve my
skills in it. I have also been the coodinator of a subject, thus learning to work in coordination with
other teachers and to solve students' problems. Through the research developed for the consecution
of the Ph.D. I have been able to carry out a complex and broad research and to obtain innovative
conclusions from it, exploring a field (domestic cult during the Roman period) not yet properly
studied for the Iberian Peninsula. Main skills acquired are independent thinking, full development
and successfully end of a project, management of a variety of archaeological methodologies, work
development in an international context. By means of the collaboration in different research projects,
I have acquired experience in field project work and management, in working in group, taking on
responsibilities and leadership qualities.

Relevant results: In the context of the information known from other parts of the Roman world –especially the
Vesuvian cities- and from the protohistoric domestic cults in the Iberian Peninsula, the analysis of the topography
of the domestic cult in the Roman provinces Baetica and Tarraconensis points to the great importance that the
social value and the protective function –of the family, the home or the business- had in the position of the lararia,
that could be devoted to one (protection), other (family representation) or both functions. Some peculiarities of the

Relevant results: In Roman Spain, as in other areas of the Roman world, the domestic cult is a substantial area
of study to obtain a deeper knowledge of the domestic domain. The analysis of the domestic cult provides rich
information about the value of the aristocratic house as a space of social scope and, thus, of the relation between
public and private spaces. It also enables to appreciate a hybridization between vernacular and foreign traditions
which confers a specific singularity to this cult.

Relevant results: Cult images, portable altars, oil lamps and many other types of objects were part of the
housefurnishings used in the lararia for the celebration of the domestic rites in the Roman period. An analysis of
this material culture is carried out in this paper, in the Roman world as a whole –with the main reference of the
Vesuvian cities-, and more specifically in the Roman provinces Baetica and Tarraconensis. The importance of
these archaeological evidences for a better knowledge of the Roman domestic cult, as well as the problems for
their correct identification in relation to the cult, are discussed.

Relevant results: In this publication, still in press, an analysis is made of the different places for household religion
in the Pompeian Domus of Ariadna. This case of study is specially interesting for the high number of this sort
of spaces identified (five), which were in use in different periods of the life of the house. Some of them were in
use for centuries, while others were made after the earthquake in 64 d.C. Their location and chronology give us
information about the changes in the house, as well as about the different uses of the religious spaces within the

Relevant results: Analysis of the local identities and cultural interactions reflected in the archaeological remains
of the domestic cult in the Roman provinces Baetica and Tarraconensis. Contribution to the study of the peculiar
Hispanoroman reality from an innovative point of view and with new interesting data that complete the information
already known. The material culture suggests that, there was a transitional period of coexistence and mixing of
traditions and that, since approximately the second half of the 1st century BC, prevailed the Roman ones. But, in
spite of the formal Roman appearance of the domestic cult, the election of certain gods, the high and early social
value given to the shrines, the maintenance of certain local rites, etc., are related to ancient indigenous traditions,
which don’t disappear but evolve and take new shapes due to the contact with new cultural realities, in a process
of hybridization.
