Latest Enrolment date 1 week prior LS date NATO Nations PfP Nations Australia and 3 weeks prior LS date Enrol on-line at http://www.cso.nato.int/Meetings.aspx All presentations and discussions will be held in English. Background The mission of STO is to conduct and promote co-operative research and information exchange. STO consists of a three level organization: the Science and Technology Board (STB), the Panels and the Technical Teams. The NATO Modelling and Simulation Group (MSG) is one of the seven Panels/Group under the STB. The mission of the NATO Modelling and Simulation (M&S) Group (NMSG) is to promote co-operation among Alliance bodies, NATO member nations and partner nations to maximise the effective utilisation of M&S. . Theme The use of Modelling and Simulation (M&S) is increasing throughout NATO and the allied nations. As the need to integrate M&S into the NATO and the nations environment increases, the demand for new techniques increases. Current trends in digital game-based learning show an increase in the development and use of serious games. Serious games present learning objectives in a game-like environment and tightly connect learning and training to computer game playing. Computer games interactively involve the player in the game world and keep the player's motivation to continue playing at a high level throughout the game. This is very desirable for education and makes serious games attractive for learning. The potential of computer games to motivate players to continue playing as well as to reach younger learners makes them especially attractive for education and training. The motivation that is generated by computer games is ascribed to an appropriate balance between stimulation and resolution that challenges players without overtaxing them. The purpose of this lecture series is to introduce the audience to computer games, how games are designed and the benefits that an organisation can achieve by using serious games. Topics To Be Covered: • Introduction to the Lecture Series • Introduction to Games and Simulation • Comparing Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Games, and Simulations • Practical Game Design • Pedagogy and Balanced Design Principles • Gaming and Social Media • Serious Gaming: Policies for Innovation • Practical Uses of Computer Games and Case Studies • Top 10 Serious Games Trends • Conclusion of the Lecture Series Thème La modélisation et la simulation (M&S) sont de plus en plus utilisées par l'OTAN et les pays alliés. DAY ONE 08:30 09:00 Mr Pete MORRISON (AUS) Bohemia Interactive Simulations pete@bisimulations.com 09:15 Dr Peter SMITH (USA) Advanced Distributed Learning Co-Lab 10:30 11:00 09:30 peter.smith.ctr@adlnet.gov Mr Allan Gillis (CAN) DRDC Canada allan.gillis@drdc-rddc.gc.ca Mr Mark Lewis (GBR) Defence Academy 12:00 13:00 14:30 m.d.lewis2@cranfield.ac.uk 15:30 16:00 Local Coordinators 17:00 Madrid, Spain – 11-12 Nov 2013 Mr. Fernando Iñigo ESP Ministry of Defence Arturo Soria, 289 28033 Madrid SPAIN Tel: +34 91 395 4629/4601 Email: finivil@oc.mde.es Madrid (ESP) on 11-12 Nov 2013 Ankara (TUR) on 14-15 Nov 2013 Open to citizens from NATO, Partnership-for-Peace (PfP) Nations and Australia.
