The protection of plant varieties is a sui generis Intellectual Property right, mostly applied world-wide. The purpose of the system is to stimulate new breeders and new breeding work, thereby increasing domestic and international market scope. THURSDAY 13 NOVEMBER 2014 The UPOV mission statement refers to “the aim of encouraging the development of new varieties of plants, for the benefit of society”. The range of benefits includes economic, health, environmental benefits and even pure pleasure, for example with ornamental plants. At the same time, an Intellectual Property right for plant varieties incentivises breeders to invest in research and develop new varieties, meeting sustainability objectives. Moreover, the breeder’s exemption facilitates innovation in variety development and encourages competition in the breeding industry. The two-day programme will take a close look at the main topics related to plant variety protection at EU and international level.
