Second Sunday of Easter From the Rector Very Rev. Joseph Tizio, C.Ss.R. Today, the Sunday after Easter, is Divine Mercy Sunday and as the name implies, it is a day to celebrate the great mercy of our God. This day has a special meaning for all of us since this has also been declared as a jubilee year of mercy by Pope Francis. If you know anything about Pope Francis, you know that the mercy of God is the central teaching of his ministry to the Church. He has repeatedly instructed those of us who minister in the Church to be agents of God’s mercy and forgiveness, to be generous in extending God’s mercy to all. He reminds us that while rules and regulations are important, we must first consider the command of Jesus Christ that we love one another and give to others, the same forgiveness that God has given to us. Who of us has not been in need of God’s forgiveness? Who of us has not had an experience of receiving God’s amazing mercy and forgiveness? We must offer that same mercy and forgiveness to others. I have begun reading Pope Francis’ new book “The Name of God is Mercy” and I was struck by one particular story in which a man was about to die and the priest asked him if he was sorry for his sins to which he replied that he truly did not feel sorry. To which the priest asked him if he was sorry about not being sorry and when the man said yes, he was immediately given absolution. What the Divine Mercy means is that God is on our side, God wants to forgive us and will find every possible way to extend mercy to us. In the book of the Prophet Ezekiel God proclaims that he takes not delight in the death of the sinner but would rather that they turn to him and live (Ezekiel 33:11). Today we celebrate the God who cannot wait to extend us mercy and forgiveness. May we always turn to him and live. Thank You!
