Mary - Mother of Mercy
Not only is the Bible filled with references to the mercy of God, but Catholic piety is
also filled with references to Mary, the Mother of Jesus as the Mother of Mercy. As a
child most of us probably learned this prayer: Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
Our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
Immediately after the Sin of Adam and Eve, God already had Mary in mind when, in
His Mercy, He promised the redemption to come through Jesus, son of Mary. "I will
put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers." (Gen.
3:15) As we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of
Guadalupe, we realize that God fashioned Mary to be the created instrument of His
mercy in the world.
Mary did not merit this special Grace. "Mary is the one who experienced mercy in
an exceptional way." (John Paul II, Dives in Misericordia, Sec. 9) It was a unique gift given to her
by the Father of Mercy only because of the merits of His incarnate Son, Jesus Christ.
In a sense, "the whole world's salvation began with a foundational act of unmerited,
unprompted, freely given Divine Mercy: That at of mercy was Mary' Immaculate

"Mary is Mother of Mercy because her Son, Jesus Christ, was sent by the Father as
the revelation of God’s Mercy. (Jn.3:16-18) Mary is our Mother of Mercy because she
gave birth to Christ, who came not to condemn but to forgive and to show mercy.
(Mt.9:13) No human sin can erase the mercy of God, or prevent him from unleashing
his triumphant power, if we of the Father, who, in order to ransom a slave, sacrificed
His only Son: His mercy toward us is Redemption." (John Paul II, Veritatis Splendor, 1993) "
Mary is our Mother of Mercy because she was the one chosen to be the Mother of the
Merciful Savior. It was she who literally brought Divine Mercy to birth in our world.
She is the one who gave us "Jesus Christ, who is the face of the Father's Mercy". (Pope
Francis, MisericordiaeVultus, 1, 2015)
Mary also showed herself as the Mother of Mercy at the Wedding of Cana when she
pleaded with her Son, "They have no wine." Jesus seems indifferent to the plea.
Then Mary, in speaking to the servants, adds: "Do whatever he tells you." (Jn. 2:1-11)
Mary wants to be sure that the followers of Jesus never lack the wine that is the Holy
Spirit that will continue to strengthen and inspire the followers of her Son to be
faithful witnesses of the Gospel and fill them with the joy and fire of his love.
Finally, as she prayed for the Apostles in the Upper Room to be opened to the gift of
the Spirit, she continues to intercede for us day to be open to receive and be
transformed by the Holy Spirit to share the Father's mercy and love with others.

María – Madre de Misericordia
No sólo es la Biblia llenada de referencias a la misericordia de Dios, pero la piedad católica
también está lleno de referencias a María, la madre de Jesús como Madre de Misericordia.
Como un niño la mayoría de nosotros probablemente aprendió esta plegaria: Salve Reina
Santa, Madre de Misericordia, Nuestra Vida, Nuestro Dulzor y Nuestra Esperanza.
Inmediatamente después del pecado de Adán y Eva, Dios ya tenía María en mente cuando,
en Su Misericordia, prometió la redención por venir a través de Jesús, Hijo de María. "I
pondré enemistad entre ti y la mujer y entre tu descendencia y la suya. " (Gen. 3:15) Al
celebrar la solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción y Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, nos
damos cuenta de que Dios formó a María para ser el instrumento creado de Su
Misericordia en el Mundo.
María no merece esta Gracia especial. "María es lo uno que experimentó la misericordia de
una manera excepcional." (John Paul II, Dives en Misericordia, Sec. 9) Es un regalo único que le
dio el Padre de la Misericordia sólo por los méritos de Su hijo encarnado, Jesucristo. En
cierto sentido, "la salvación de todo el mundo comenzó con un acto fundacional de
inmerecido, espontáneo, da libremente a la Divina Misericordia: que en el de la

"María es Madre de Misericordia porque su Hijo, Jesucristo, fue enviado por el Padre

María es Nuestra Madre de Misericordia porque ella fue la elegida para ser la Madre del
Salvador misericordioso. Fue ella quien literalmente trajo La Divina Misericordia al
nacimiento en nuestro mundo. Ella es la que nos dio "Jesús Cristo, que es el rostro de la
Misericordia del Padre". (Papa Francis, MisericordiaeVultus, 1, 2015)
María también se mostró como la Madre de la Misericordia en las bodas de Caná cuando
ella le pidió a su Hijo, «No tienen ningún vino». Jesús parece indiferente a la petición.
Entonces María, al hablar a los criados, añade: "Hacer lo que él os diga". (Juan. 2:1-11)
María quiere estar seguro que los seguidores de Jesús nunca falta el vino que es el Espíritu
Santo que continuará para fortalecer e inspirar a los seguidores de su Hijo a ser testigos
fieles del Evangelio y llene con la alegría y el fuego de su amor. Finalmente, como ella oró
por los Apóstoles en el Aposento alto a ser abierto al don del Espíritu, ella continúa
intercediendo por nosotros día de estar abierto a recibir y ser transformados por el
Espíritu Santo para compartir la Misericordia del Padre y el amor con otros.
“Sean compasivos como es compasivo el Padre de Ustedes.” (Lucas 6:36)
