Mexico supports the initiative to put a price on carbon
 Setting a price on carbon is an effective measure to reduce of greenhouse gas
emissions and promote the use of cleaner fuels.
In his participation at the Carbon Pricing Panel under the framework of the 21st Conference
of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21), President
Enrique Peña Nieto, stressed that:
"Mexico considers that setting a price on carbon is an effective measure to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions and promote the use of cleaner fuels."
"In 2013, carbon tax on fossil fuels with emissions higher than those of natural gas was
adopted, and the creation of the carbon market has advanced in our country".
Mexico’s commitments. Mexico was the first developing country to submit its Intended and
Determined Contribution at National Level, aimed at reducing 22% the greenhouse gas
emissions and 51% of the black carbon emissions by 2030.
“Mexico has also pledged to generate 35% of energy from clean sources by 2024 and 43%
by 2030. Currently, our country has established a General Law on Climate Change”.
