Practice position words through kinesthetic
learning methods. Bring a chair to the front
of the room and invite a child to be the
“marmota.” Read the first caption in the
issue: ¿Dónde está la marmota? Al lado de la
niña o encima de la niña. Ask the “marmota”
to act it out, using the chair as a prop. First
he or she can stand beside the chair, and
then he or she can go over the chair. Let
children take turns acting out the position
words as you read the rest of the issue.
Go on an alphabet scavenger hunt!
Display the Big Issue and point out that
it only goes up to the letter D. Then
together, try to find every other letter of
the alphabet! Go in alphabetical order and
circle each letter you find—the letters do
not have to be at the beginning of words.
How many letters can your class hunt
down? (The issue contains every letter of
the alphabet except f, k, ñ, and x.)
Before you read the issue,

Activity: White Wigs
For brushing practice, cut off the
bottoms of a few two-liter plastic bottles
and cover rough edges with duct tape.
When you turn them upside down, they
look like molars! Provide children with
toothbrushes and let them practice, using
shaving cream as toothpaste. To practice
flossing, glue two “dientes” side by side.
Give children strings of yarn and show
them how to floss in between!

Have children pretend to be animals that
sleep through winter the way groundhogs
do in their burrows! Point out places in the
classroom that might make a good place
to “hibernar,” such as pillows in the library
corner, beneath a large table, and so on.
Put on some lively music. Tell children that
while the music plays, it’s spring—they can
pretend to dance and play outdoors. When
the music stops, it’s winter, and they must
find a safe place to curl up and go to sleep!
Poem: El Día de la Marmota
En su madriguera,
la marmota espera,
dormida, la primavera.
En febrero despierta.
Se pone muy alerta.
Si su sombra a ver no acierta,
La primavera está cerca.

Song: ¡Cepilla tus dientes!
Cepilla tus dientes, un, dos, tres.
Cepilla tus dientes otra vez.
Cepilla tus dientes aquí y allá.
Cepilla tus dientes por detrás,
por arriba, por abajo.
Esto no es un gran trabajo.
¡Ay, qué bueno es cepillar
y con agua enjuagar!

Read Together: Animal Talk
Have children tell the story the way the
animals would! Ask volunteers to play the
ladybug, mouse, frog, bunny, puppy, lamb,
and pig. Let children decide how they
think their animal would say “¡te quiero!”
Then have them line up in order and have
each animal give the message to the next
one, for instance: ¡Clic clic clic! ¡Iiik iiik
iiik! ¡Croac croac croac! ¡Ñam ñam ñam!
¡Guau guau guau! ¡Bee bee bee! ¡Oink oink
oink! Then let a new group give it a try!
Activity: Class Lovebugs
Write each child’s name on a paper
heart, followed by the word quiere. Then
have children complete the sentence by
writing or dictating a person, activity,
food, or anything else they love. For
instance: María quiere a su mamá;
Brian quiere pizza; Raquel quiere bailar.
To create the lovebug’s head, draw a
face on a smaller heart and attach
pipe-cleaner antennae. Attach the head
to the body and hang up!

• Read the text on the poster aloud. Ask
children how they might have felt if they
had been Jackie Robinson. Would they
have been as brave as he was?
• You can create a fun display by cutting
out paper baseballs and writing a word
to describe Jackie Robinson on each
one, for instance: brave, hero, strong,
tough, and so on.
