Abstract
Microsoft's new service, Power BI, provides a way to analyze data and present the results in a visually appealing way,
without the bother of consulting an enterprise business intelligence software package. Power BI is a business
intelligence solution developed by Microsoft to convert data into information. Power BI is a self-service tool
delivered using Microsoft Excel and Office 365. Using Power BI, users can generate charts and reports for data
analysis and data visualization purposes.

1. Introduction
Power BI is a business intelligence solution developed by Microsoft to convert data into information. Power BI is a
self-service tool delivered using Microsoft Excel and Office 365. Using Power BI, users can generate charts and
reports for data analysis and data visualization purposes.
Power BI Designer unifies the formerly separate Power BI Excel add-in tools: Power Query, Power Pivot and Power
View into one powerful application. It is an optional Power BI content authoring option for users that are unable to
upgrade to the latest version of Excel. For Excel Power BI fans, the existing Power Query, Power Pivot and Power
View Excel tools will continue to be supported. However, Microsoft shared that Power BI Designer will be updated
more frequently than the Excel Power BI add-ins and remain a truly free desktop offering after the preview version is
released into general availability later this year.
2. POWER BI Concepts
Microsoft Power BI helps us stay up to date with the information that matters. With Power BI, dashboards help us
keep a finger on the pulse of your business. Your dashboards display tiles that you can click to explore further
with reports. Connect to multiple datasets to bring all of the relevant data together in one place.
The 3 major building blocks of Power BI are: dashboards, reports, and datasets. You can't have dashboards or
reports without data (well, you can have empty dashboards and empty reports, but they're not very useful until they
have data.)
3. Dashboards
A dashboard is something you create or something a colleague creates and shares with you. It is a single canvas that
contains one or more tiles. Each tile displays a single visualization that was created from the data in one of the
underlying dataset(s). The only exception to this is a brand new dashboard created from scratch – if I click the plus
icon next to Dashboards, and name it – my new dashboard has no tiles at all. To create and add a tile, you must be in
report Editing View or in Q&A.
ONE dashboard... - can display visualizations from many different datasets - can display visualizations from many
different reports
Create personalized dashboards to monitor your most important data, at a glance. A dashboard combines onpremises and cloud-born data in a single pane of glass, providing a consolidated view across the organization
regardless of where the data lives. Each metric, or insight, is displayed on the dashboard as a tile.
5
3.1 Create an empty dashboard
next to the Dashboards heading.

Click the plus sign

Type a name for your new dashboard.

Connect to at least one dataset. You can use data from reports or datasets already in your Power BI, or you
can add a new data source.
3.2 Dashboard tiles in Power BI
A tile is a snapshot of your data, pinned to the dashboard. A tile can be created from a report, dataset, dashboard,
from the Q&A box, Excel, and from SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
6
3.3 Tile Creation
Tiles can be pinned to dashboards from reports, Q&A, SSRS, Excel, and more.

When you select an item to pin, Power BI opens the Pin to dashboard screen.

Decide whether to pin to an existing dashboard or new dashboard. If existing, select the dashboard name
from the dropdown. If new, enter the name for the new dashboard.
In some cases, the item you are pinning may have a theme already applied. For example, visuals pinned from
an Excel workbook. If so, select which theme to apply to the tile.

Publishing an organizational content pack adds it to the content pack gallery. This centralized repository makes it
easy for members to browse and discover dashboards, reports, and datasets published for them.

To view the content pack library, select Get Data > My Organization.
In Power BI you can share your dashboards several different ways. Each has its advantages. You can:



Share a dashboard with your colleagues.
Create a dashboard in a group And then share it with colleagues outside the group
Create a content pack and publish it to your whole organization or to a security or distribution list.
7
4. Reports
A Power BI report is one or more pages of visualizations (charts and graphs). Reports can be created from scratch
within Power BI, can be imported with dashboards that colleagues share with you, or can be created for you when
you connect to datasets from Excel, Power BI Desktop, databases, and SaaS applications and content packs. For
example, when you connect to an Excel workbook that contains Power View sheets, Power BI creates a report based
on those sheets. And when you connect to a SaaS application, Power BI imports a pre-built report.
There are 2 ways to view and interact with reports: Reading View and Editing View. Only a report creator or owner
can open Editing View for a report. Use Editing View to create and modify and explore your report. Reading View
offers more-limited interaction; you can interact with filters (if the report owner created any), dig down into
visualizations, do page-level filtering and highlighting, and temporarily pin visualizations to the dashboard (the
pinned tiles will not be saved when you close and reopen Power BI).
ONE report... - can be associated with multiple dashboards (tiles pinned from that one report can appear on multiple
dashboards). - can be created using data from one dataset. (the slight exception to this is that Power BI Desktop can
combine more than 1 dataset into a single report and that report can be imported into Power BI)
A report is a multi-perspective view into your data, with visualizations that represent different findings and insights
from that data. A report may have a single visualization or pages full of visualizations.
There are different ways to create a new report:


From a dataset.
From an existing report
4.1 Create a new report from a dataset
This method creates a new report from scratch.

Select a dataset to open it or right-click and select Explore.


Explore your data and add visualizations.
Save your report.
8
4.2 Create a new report from an existing report


Open a report.
From the File menu, select Save As.

Type a name for the new report and select Save.
A Success message lets you know that the new report was saved to Power BI.

Back in your Power BI navigation pane, select the new report to open it.
9
5. Datasets
A dataset is something that you import or connect to. Use Power BI to bring all of your data together. See it all in one
place and access it from all of your devices.
In the navigation pane, the datasets you've connected to are listed under the Datasets heading. Each listed dataset
represents a single source of data, for example, an Excel workbook on OneDrive, or an on-premises SSAS tabular
dataset, or a Salesforce dataset.
ONE dataset... - can be used over and over. - can be used in many different reports. - Visualizations from that one
dataset can display on many different dashboards.
To connect to a dataset, select Get Data (at the bottom of the navigation pane) or select the plus icon (next to
the Datasets heading). Follow the instructions to connect to the specific source and add the dataset to your
workspace. The new dataset is added to the left navigation pane with a yellow asterisk. The work you do in Power BI
does not change the underlying dataset.
Connecting to the data:
How you get data depends on the kind of data you're getting.

Starting from the dashboard to which you want to add the workbook data, select Get Data at the bottom of
the left navigation pane.

Take your pick of data sources: organizational or service content packs, files, databases, and samples.
10
6. Conclusion
Microsoft Power BI is a collection of online services and features that enables you to find and visualize data, share
discoveries, and collaborate in intuitive new ways. There are two experiences now available for Power BI: the new
experience, generally referred to as Power BI, and the previous experience which is referred to as Power BI for
Office 365.
