My name is Brian Baker. I've just finished my fifth year of seminary formation, preparing to become a priest for the Archdiocese of Atlanta. I have been at the North American College in Rome, Italy for the last three years and have come back home to Atlanta to engage in a year of invaluable experience in a parish setting before ordination to the transitional diaconate and completion of seminary. I am thrilled to be assigned to such a vibrant parish community, and am grateful for the opportunity to serve all of you and receive the best pastoral training I could possibly have over this next year. A little about me: I am 33 years old and am one of five children. My mother is from South Korea and my father from New England. Dad was in the Air Force while we grew up but we stayed mostly in southeast Virginia where I was born. I studied pre-medicine at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA before arriving in Atlanta in September 2002. I had the goal of becoming a professional singer of some sort and had a fun stint as a member of a blues/ rock band around Atlanta for a year. I joined Immaculate Heat of Mary parish in 2004 and while there, God worked on my heart in the loving persistent way only he knows how to do. Finally, I heard his call to become a priest of Jesus Christ and after discerning between joining the Franciscans and the Archdiocese, it became very clear God was calling me to serve the people of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Thank you all for the prayers you offer for vocations and for all of us Atlanta Seminarians. We could not respond to God's call without the graces we receive from your prayers. I look forward to getting to know you over the next year as I serve and worship our Lord with you. THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Vacation bible school Vacation Bible School 2012 By Anne Boshinski One hundred and eighty children enjoyed exploring a tropical Island during Adventure Island—Discovering God’s Life-saving Promises, CTK’s Vacation Bible School this year, held June 18 through June 22. Without leaving the Hyland Center, they enjoyed glittering turquoise waters, warm white sands and cool ocean breezes. But this was no ordinary tropical escape. There was treasure to be found. More precious than gold, more lasting than diamonds, the children were seeking the greatest treasure of all – God’s life-saving promises. As Catholics, we believe that life begins with God’s love for us, and continues as His love flows through us to others. On Adventure Island the participants discovered once again the rich treasure of God’s love and promises through the truths of scripture. Each day the children heard how events from the Bible show the amazing promises of God’s love for us. On Monday, the first discovered Promise was: I Am With You . On Tuesday, the children discovered God’s Promise of I Care About You. On Wednesday, God’s Promise was I Give You What You Need. On Thursday, the Promise of God is I Will Save You. And on Friday, we heard the promise of I Will Answer You . Students started each day on their special “island”.– and then moved to small group sessions for other activities. Through guided opportunities, the children read scripture, acted out scripture stories, made crafts, sang lots of songs, ate special snacks (including “fish” crackers) and played in the sun and hunted for God’s Promises. On Friday, the program closed with a group prayer celebration for parents and friends. Father Frank McNamee lead the children in prayer and songs (that they learned during the week) as they retold the scripture stories of the week. Just as Jesus commands us to “love one another”, the children were given an opportunity to show their love of neighbor by participating in a service project to help less-fortunate children by collecting school supplies. These will be donated to 3 Atlanta based family shelters and our own CTK’s Hispanic Ministry. JULY 1, 2012 VBS Volunteers This year’s program was made possible through the generous donation of time, talent and treasure of more than 33 volunteers who served as catechists, classroom aides, snack coordinators and recreation facilitators! Catechists “Echo the Faith” – and share in a ministry of service to build up the Body of Christ! This calling to the ministry of catechist is a vocation. That call is the voice of the Holy Spirit. (NDC, 228) The word catechist comes from a Greek root word that means “to echo.” Through your life and your teaching as a catechist you are a person who echoes the Word of God. Catechists teach through their words and example to help nurture the spiritual growth of our young children. The four aims of catechesis are: 1) To proclaim the Christian message; 2) To prepare for Prayer and Worship; 3) To build community; 4) To motivate for Christian living and service. Preparation and training includes introduction to content, understanding of catechetical process and spiritual growth opportunities. Classes begin on Sept. 9.
