August 15, 2010 The Assumption of the Blessed virgin mary The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Today, August 15, we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed (taken up) body and soul into heavenly glory. She was exalted by the Lord as Queen of Heaven and Earth, and in this Assumption, Mary was the first to experience the bodily Resurrection that is promised to all who believe in Christ. A little more history: We have no real knowledge of the day, year, and manner of Our Lady's death. The dates which have been assigned to her death vary between three and fifteen years after Jesus’ Ascension. By tradition, Mary lived at Ephesus after the death of Jesus, and her tomb was presumably found in Jerusalem. It is believed that Mary died in the presence of the Apostles, but that after her burial, her tomb, when opened, was found empty. 2699 Peachtree Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30305 404-233-2145 www.cathedralofchristtheking.org WHAT’S INSIDE: For hundreds of years, Catholics observed the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary -- but it was not until 1950 that the Church proclaimed this teaching a dogma of the Church -- one of the essential beliefs of the Catholic faith. Words from a familiar hymn, Immaculate Mary, remind us of Mary’s presence in heaven: Immaculate Mary, thy praises we sing, Who reignest in splendor with Jesus, Our King. Ave, Ave, Ave Maria! In all he says and does, man is obliged to follow faithfully what he knows to be just and right’ (n. 1778). From this definition it emerges that the moral conscience, to be able to judge human conduct rightly, above all must be based on the solid foundation of truth, that is, it must be enlightened to know the true value of actions and the solid criteria for evaluation. Therefore, it must be able to distinguish good from evil, even where the social environment, pluralistic culture and superimposed interests do not help it do so” (Address to the Pontifical Academy for Life, February 24, 2007).
