FROM THE PASTOR FR. JIM BAHASH
What kind of house are you building for the Lord? In the first reading from this Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of
Advent, we hear King David tell the prophet Nathan, “Here I am living in a house of cedar, while the ark of
God dwells in a tent!” At first, Nathan tells David to do as he will in building a proper house for the Ark of
the Covenant, God’s dwelling on earth. But then the Lord says to David, “Hey buddy, you aren’t going to
build my house, I’m the one that is going to build YOUR house.” Actually, He says, “I will raise up your heir
after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm. I will be a father to him, and he shall be a
son to me.”
These words of God are fulfilled perfectly in the coming of his son, Jesus Christ. Today’s gospel relates how
this comes to pass and how Mary becomes the dwelling of God, the new Ark of the Covenant. As the archangel Gabriel brings God’s message to Mary that he has chosen her to be the mother of Jesus, she, for her part,
proclaims, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to your word.” With her
consent the Word of God, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, becomes a human like us and dwells
among us. Mary was certainly a worthy dwelling for Jesus herself being conceived without sin. But it was at
her “fiat”, her “yes” to God that the Word became flesh.
Something similar applies to us. When we are free of sin and say “yes” to the will of God he dwells with us.
In fact, he makes his home within us. Christmas is just a couple of days away and Jesus is looking for a home
in which to dwell. When he came to us the first time there was no room for him at the inn. When he comes
again will there be room in your heart to receive him? Like Mary let us prepare a home for him by being free
of sin (confession) and saying yes to him by following all of his commandments through the teachings of his
bride, the Church.
CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART
Christmas! ’Tis the season for kindling the fire of
hospitality in the hall, the genial fire of charity in the
heart.
—Washington Irving

Pastoral Letter of Marriage
December 21: Marriage:
Love and Life In The Divine Plan:
Growing Together in Virtues
“There is another way to look at growth in marriage:
namely, as growth in virtue. As a couple grows in virtue,
they grow in holiness. In other words, the couple acquires,
by prayer and discipline, those interior qualities that open
them to God‘s love and allow them to share in his love more
deeply. Couples instinctively understand this when they
speak about their marriage being a means of leading each
other to heaven.” To read the document go to http://
