Principal’s Message
Dear Piner High School Parents and Families,
Perhaps you are surprised as I am at how quickly the first semester has flown by. I am writing this letter
over Winter Break as we transition from fall to spring, and I recognize that Piner too is transitioning from
one season to another. We are evolving from a very traditional high school to one that embraces teaching
and learning focused on 21st Century skills, Common Core Standards, and Science Technology
Engineering and Math (STEM) education. This blend of the old and the new serves us well. As the
marquee in the front of the school reminds us, this is the thirty-third year of the Sonoma County Classic,
an invitational basketball tournament that is sponsored by Piner during the holiday season. We are
proud of a history that includes celebrations of tradition. We are also committed to moving forward. If
you have lived within this community for more than a decade, you may also know that Piner High School
has long had a spirit of creativity and invention. In the 1990s the campus had a national reputation as a
school involved in “re-structuring” and the creation of small learning communities.
Now we are on the cutting edge once again as we establish ourselves as a STEM school. Our students are
the ones who will benefit from this focus on critical thinking, creativity, communication, and
collaboration. This fall we increased our enrollment by 150 students, and our projections show that the
upswing will continue next fall as well. Families in our local area have seen our commitment to the
highest quality education for all, and they want their children to be here. I count all of you among that
number, and I thank you for your faith in our staff, who are focused on providing high-quality
opportunities for learning for all our students every day.
Of course, we cannot do it alone. Currently we are in partnership with several community agencies
which are providing our students with additional services, as the needs arise. These include: Crisis
Assessment Prevention and Education (CAPE), Social Advocates for Youth (SAY), Sonoma State
University (SSU), Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC), Santa Rosa Police Department (SRPD), Restorative
Resources, Ten Thousand Degrees, and Migrant Education. The most important partnership is with our
families. Research shows that, when parents are consistently involved in schools, student success is the
natural outcome, and there are ample opportunities for parents to contribute to our community. Please
show your support by becoming involved in one or more of the following organizations:

Remember, it is a partnership between school and home that provides the strongest foundation for

Estimados Padres y Familias de los Alumnos de Piner High School:
Quizás que estén sorprendidos por la rapidez del primer semestre. Estoy escribiendo este carta durante las
Vacaciones de Invierno, durante la transición en entre otoño y primavera, y reconozco que en la escuela Piner
estamos cambiando también. Estamos evolucionando entre una preparatoria muy tradicional y una nueva
preparatoria que se aprovecha del aprendizaje y enseñanza que están basados en las habilidades para el Siglo 21, las
Normas Comunes Básicas y educación en los campos de Ciencias, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas (STEM).
Esta mezcla de tradición e innovación nos sirve bien. Como el letreo en frente de la escuela nos está recordando, este
es el tercer año del Sonoma County Classic, un torneo de baloncesto por invitación que la escuela Piner patrocina
durante las fiestas. Estamos orgullosos de tener una historia que incluye la celebración de varias tradiciones.
Estamos comprometidos con el avance hacia el futuro. Si usted ha vivido en esta comunidad por más de una década,
sabe que por muchos años la escuela Piner ha tenido el espíritu de creatividad e innovación. En los años noventa el
recinto tenía una buena reputación nacional como una escuela que participaba en la “reestructuración” y creación de
pequeñas comunidades educativas.
De nuevo estamos en la vanguardia debido a nuestro desarrollo como una escuela STEM. Nuestros alumnos son los
que se beneficiarán de esta concentración sobre pensamiento, creatividad, comunicación y colaboración. Este otoño
el número de alumnos inscritos en la escuela subió por 150, y nuestros pronósticos muestran que esta alza
continuará en el próximo otoño también. Las familias en nuestra área han visto nuestro compromiso con proveer
una educación de alta calidad a todos y desean que sus hijos estén aquí. Cuento con todos ustedes en este número, y
les agradezco por su fe en nuestro personal, que está enfocado en proveer oportunidades educativas de alta calidad
para todos nuestros alumnos todos los días.
Naturalmente, no lo podemos hacer solos. Actualmente estamos trabajando juntamente con algunas agencias
comunitarias que proveen servicios adicionales para nuestros alumnos, según sea necesario. Ellas incluyen: “Crisis

(SSU), “Santa Rosa Junior College” (SRJC), el departamento de policía de Santa Rosa (SRPD), Recursos
Restaurativos, “Ten Thousand Degrees”, y Educación para Migrantes. Nuestra sociedad más importante es la que
tenemos con nuestras familias. Las investigaciones han mostrado que cuando los padres están involucrados de
forma regular en las escuelas, el éxito escolar es el resultado natural, y hay muchas oportunidades de las cuales los
padres pueden aprovecharse con el fin de contribuir positivamente a nuestra comunidad. Por favor involúcrese en
