This course broadens students' knowledge of Hispanic cultures through the study of linguistic
tenses, sentence patterns and expanded vocabulary. Classes stress oral communication and are
complemented by written exercises on language and culture done at home. Prerequisite: SPAN E1b, E-1, or the equivalent. (4 credits)

Attendance
Attendance is mandatory. More than three absences from class will adversely affect your progress
and your final grade. Credit students must take all exams on dates indicated.
Guidelines
Before coming to class, students are required to study grammatical structures as well as memorize
the vocabulary corresponding to each lesson. In class, students will participate individually and in
groups/pairs. Students are required to complete all the assigned activities in the Online Student
Activities Manual (iLrn) that correspond to the chapters covered in class, as instructed.
Exams
There will be 5 exams corresponding to the chapters studied this semester. There will be oral
presentations in October and December. There will also be one final oral exam and one final
written exam on all material covered during the semester. No make-ups are given for written and
oral exams. Make-ups for the final exam are approved and administered through the Registrar’s
Office (see Catalogue). No early finals are allowed.
Assignments
Students will type homework assignments and compositions (computer) to be submitted on the
day indicated on the syllabus. Students must also complete their Online Student Activities
Manuals by the days indicated. Additional homework will be assigned in class by the instructors.
NB: Completion of Online Student Activities Manual (iLrn)assignments for each chapter is
worth 9 points on your final grade!
Grades
Oral work:
50% (class participation and oral exams and presentations)
Written work: 50% (homework, student activities manual, in-class exercises, exams,
compositions).
