 Our Great Salvation Isaiah 12 Good morning, my name is John and I’m filling in for Pastor Jeremy again this week. Lord willing, Pastor Jeremy will be back into the office this week and will be preaching from Isaiah 14. Please be in prayer for him and his wife and children. Also, please don’t forget to pray for Pastor Len & Beth as they are on a ministry assignment in the United States. Pray that God will bless them, give them rest and refreshment as they return to us later this year. I’ve been a pastor here in Latin America for over 25 years. During that time I have attended or officiated many funerals and wakes (velorios) during these years. There have been some funerals of tragic accidents of teenagers and young people involving alcohol or drugs. Others have been of those who have suffered long illnesses, or the death of a baby. But of the many that I have attended, there are two that I remember most. The first was of a young father who was tragically killed on a motorcycle accident. As I was ministering to the family, a taxi arrived at the house with some family members. As they entered the gate, a high pitch scream and wail sounded that made your hair stand up on your neck. The family members began to jump up and down screaming in desperation, and one passed out just a few steps into the yard. The other ran to the casket and began pounding uncontrollably on the casket. When the other, who had passed out, when she came to, she ran and almost jumped into the casket and grabbed her loved one and was screaming and wailing. And as I stood there, the thought passed through my mind – no hope. This family member had no hope of ever seeing their loved one again and her desperation and grief was expressed that day. Pero de los muchos que he asistido, hay dos que más recuerdo. El primero tuvo que ver con un joven padre que murió trágicamente en un accidente de motocicleta. Como yo estaba ministrando a la familia, un taxi llegó a la casa con algunos miembros de la familia. Al entrar en la puerta, un gemido estruendoso sonó y puso a todos los pelos de punta. Being that the cemetery was a maze of family pantheons and graves, we were lost and could not find the group. But then in the distance, we heard a sound. It was the sound of singing. So we walked to where the music was being played and found that there were hymns being sang. The family had gathered in the grief and were singing songs of hope and praise. encontrar al grupo. As I consider the two funerals that I shared this morning, the question is asked: why was one family in such utter desperation at the loss of a loved one and the other family singing? And of all places, they were singing at a funeral!. The answer is found in one word – hope. When we have hope we sing. We saw last week that one day in the future there will be complete harmony again and the curse will end. Jesus himself is revealed as the branch, the offspring of David and gives hope to all who place their trust in Him. And in that moment, in the future reign of Jesus, we will sing a song of deliverance, a song of salvation. And that brings us to Isaiah 12. This morning I would like for you to stand and we are going to read this passage of scripture as a responsive reading. My friend will come and help me. There are only six verses. So I will read the odd verses, that is verses 1, 3, and 5, and my friend will lead the congregation in reading verses 2, 4, and 6. Please look at the screen and read with me please. During our many years there, one place we went was a farming community called Mbyapey. It’s a Guarani name which means “bread along the water”. The most exciting thing that would happen in that town was when an ox cart went speeding down the sandy dirt road. Anyway, we organized an evangelistic outreach in the town plaza with a group of evangelists “Open Air Campaigners”. It is a similar ministry that Roberto has here in Ecuador. It is where a group of Christian musicians play praise and worship songs in a plaza or public place, and when there is a group of people gather, you share the Gospel with them. Since the people in that farming community spoke mostly Guarani, I invited an 82 year old grandmother who spoke Guarani to come with us. This grandma was an evangelists and would go into villages with hundreds of Gospel tracts and witness to people for days. So my story starts in Ireland, goes to New York City, then to Pennsylvania, then to Virginia and Paraguay. But God in His sovereignty moved us to Ecuador. During our first year in Ecuador, the church that I was substitute pastor was invited by a village chief and the village elders in a small village north of Otovalo. We organized an evangelistic outreach in that village and went there. Upon arriving we found that the whole village was waiting for us to come. After setting up and starting the program, one of the Kichwa believers told me that many in that village had never heard the Gospel. So after preaching a short Gospel message from the Bible, one of the village elders told this to one of our church leaders. “I want to let you know today that after hearing the message from the preacher, that ‘I believe!’ And what a wonderful testimony of God’s grace that the message of redemption arrived to that village. de 82 años que hablaba guaraní para venir con nosotros.
