Jubilee Year of Mercy—Fourth Sunday of Lent
On Laetare Sunday, we rejoice as Luke's Jesus proclaims
that God is boundlessly merciful. The parable's prodigal
son returns home, not authentically repentant but desperate, having squandered on prostitutes (or so his older
brother claims) the inheritance wrongly demanded while his
father still lived. This selfish son is only spared ritual
"shaming" when the father "shames" himself, running to
embrace him, interrupting his prepared "act of contrition."
By doing so he challenges confessors, and all of us, to be
signs, says Pope Francis, "of the primacy of mercy always,
everywhere, and in every situation, no matter what." Avoid
the harshness of the elder son, Francis warns, "who stands
outside, incapable of rejoicing," his judgment "severe, unjust, and meaningless in light of the father's boundless mercy" (Misericordiae Vultus, 17). If John's Gospel is proclaimed, the "religiously observant" people there likewise
serve to warn against harshly judging others, for the physical blindness of the man they expel from the synagogue is
healed, while their own blindness of heart remains.

“Fight the good fight of faith

which you made your solemn

The Second English Neocatechumenal Community of St. Barbara
Parish invites you to a Solemn Profession of Faith during this
Lent. The Profession of Faith is one of the most ancient traditions of the Church and is meant also to give hope to those who
are listening. In this opportune moment of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis reminds us that, “The Church is commissioned to announce the mercy of God, the beating heart of the
Gospel...” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). Come and listen to the
experience of these men and women who are witnesses to the
mercy of God in their lives. Professions of Faith will be given
during Evening Prayer at 8:00 p.m. in the church on Tuesdays,
February 23, March 1, March 8 and on Thursday, March 10. The
Palm of Victory will be given to those who have made their Profession on Palm Sunday Vigil, March 19 at 8:30 p.m.

intenciones y antagonismos. Gracias a Dios, ¡somos cristianos!

3rd Sunday — Spanish
We strongly urge parent/s to contact the rectory
for information during pregnancy or before planning the Baptism. An infant’s Baptism requires a
commitment of accepting certain religious and
spiritual responsibilities for the child by both
parents and godparents. The role of the parish
staff is to help assist you in making these commitments.
