Social media can be defined as websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. Now that we know what it is, let's talk about its positive and negative effects. Positive Effects THESE ARE SOME OF THE POSTIVE EFFECTS SOCIAL MEDIA HAS. Overcoming barriers. Social media can be used to overcome barriers of distance and time, allowing its users to connect and communicate with people all over the world. Entertainment. Social media is a good source of entertainment, whether it be videos, games, movies and many more forms of entertainment. Negative Effects THESE ARE SOME OF THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA. Promotion of negative thoughts/habits. Studies have found an increased risk for depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts linked to the heavy use of social media. Cyberbullying. About 10 percent of teens report being bullied on social media and many other users are subjected to offensive comments. Social media platforms such as Twitter can be hotspots for spreading hurtful rumors, lies, and abuse that can leave lasting emotional scars. Inadequacy about your life or appearance. With social media, your self perception may be warped due to exposure of certain ideas o images. Some other negative effects FOMO (fear of missing out) Depression and Anxiety Sites such as Facebook and Instagram seem to exacerbate feelings that others are having more fun or living better lives than you are. Human beings need face-to-face contact to be mentally healthy. Isolation Self Absortion A study at the University of Pennsylvania found that high usage of Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram increases rather decreases feelings of loneliness. Sharing endless selfies and all your innermost thoughts on social media can create an unhealthy self-centeredness and distance you from real-life connections.
