In the Gospel today, Jesus warns us not to give in to hopes of repayment, but to give openhandedly to the poor and needy. That sort of giving mirrors the bountiful giving of God, and

CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING
Adult Confirmation
Why do Catholics need the
Sacrament of Confirmation?
Confirmation confers upon us
special graces and gifts of the Holy
Spirit. It can change our lives by
increasing and deepening all of the
graces we received at baptism.
The Five Effects of
Confirmation:
 Roots us more deeply as sons/




daughters of God
Unites us more firmly to Christ
Increases the gifts of the Holy
Spirit in us,
Renders our bond with the
Church more perfect
Gives special strength to spread
and defend the faith by word
and action, as true witnesses of
Christ and to never be ashamed
of the Cross.

Every Sunday in the Catholic Church something beautiful happens around the
world. In many different languages, Catholics come together to celebrate the
Eucharist and listen to the same Scripture readings every week.
The Sunday readings come from the lectionary, the Church’s official list of
readings for liturgical use. There are three cycles to the lectionary: Cycle A, B
and C. The readings offer an easy and interesting way to study Scripture and
grow in your relationship with Jesus Christ as you stay in touch with the
Church year.
Join us and make the Mass more meaningful by studying the Sunday readings
and applying them to your daily life.
Registration Fee is $15.00 received on or before September 6th, and $25.00
after. No refunds (Workbook included) Limited partial scholarships available.

Pastoral Care Ministry
Dottie O’Connor • 404-233-2145 x440 • doconnor@ctking.com
Who are Stephen Ministers?
They are well trained parish members commissioned to provide oneto-one caring lay ministry to persons in crisis such as a person
grieving from a divorce, the loss of a loved one, or of a job, health
debilitation, living a time of pain or lack of direction. They are
grounded in Jesus’ command to love one another.
Are you interested in being a Stephen Minister? A Stephen Minister uses both
words and deeds, listening and comforting, to express Christ's care for others
going through difficult times. They are members of Christ the King who with
training tools provided during the training sessions serve others. Consider
becoming a Stephen Minister. Contact Dottie O’Connor, doconnor@ctking.com
404-233-2145 (440). Training begins in September on Wednesdays, 7 – 8:45 pm.

FOCUS ON THE SAINTS: Blessed Junípero Serra, O.F.M.
Founder of the Spanish missions in California
As a young man in Spain, Blessed Junípero Serra joined the Franciscan order and began a
short career as a professor, famous for his preaching. When he was thirty-five, he suddenly
began to yearn for the life of a missionary in the New World. He left everything behind and
boarded a ship bound for Vera Cruz, Mexico. On his way to Mexico City, an insect bite
infected his leg so badly that walking pained him for the rest of his life. Among his many
great accomplishments as a missionary are listed two particularly: It was he whose insistence and dedication brought
about the "Regulation" protecting the Native Americans and the missions. He is also known for founding the great
mission of San Juan Capistrano, in California. He founded 21 missions and taught the Native Americans many
trades, from farming to crafting.
PRAYER FOR INTERCESSION OF BLESSED JUNÍPERO
O God, in your ineffable mercy, you chose Blessed Junípero Serra as a means of gathering many peoples of the Americas into
your Church. Grant that through his intercession our hearts may be united to you in ever greater love so that at all times and in
all places we may show forth the image of your Only-Begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the
unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING
What is an Active
Parishioner?
Our parishioners are often asking us
to verify that they are an “active
practicing Catholic.” The question of
parishioner status is important
because this question comes up in
many circumstances such as





Certification as godparents/
sponsors for Baptisms and
Confirmation
Active parishioner tuition rates in
Catholic schools
Marriage/Baptism preparation
Scheduling of the facilities for
services such as Baptisms,
Weddings and Funerals
Enrolling children in our
programs
In practice, Parishioner verification is
done by looking equally at three
criteria: Registration, Regular Mass
Attendance, and Financial and Time
Support.
If you have any questions regarding
the parishioner verification process,
please contact Molly Kerr at
mkerr@ctking.com.
Msgr. Frank McNamee encourages
you to be an active member of our
parish. Your parish – and your own
faith life – is enriched and
strengthened by the participation of
our members!

Queridas familias de la Catedral de Cristo
Rey,
asistencia a Cristo Rey.

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
SEPTEMBER 1, 2013
