Founder of the Spanish missions in California As a young man in Spain, Blessed Junípero Serra joined the Franciscan order and began a short career as a professor, famous for his preaching. When he was thirty-five, he suddenly began to yearn for the life of a missionary in the New World. He left everything behind and boarded a ship bound for Vera Cruz, Mexico. On his way to Mexico City, an insect bite infected his leg so badly that walking pained him for the rest of his life. Among his many great accomplishments as a missionary are listed two particularly: It was he whose insistence and dedication brought about the "Regulation" protecting the Native Americans and the missions. He is also known for founding the great mission of San Juan Capistrano, in California. He founded 21 missions and taught the Native Americans many trades, from farming to crafting. PRAYER FOR INTERCESSION OF BLESSED JUNÍPERO O God, in your ineffable mercy, you chose Blessed Junípero Serra as a means of gathering many peoples of the Americas into your Church. Grant that through his intercession our hearts may be united to you in ever greater love so that at all times and in all places we may show forth the image of your Only-Begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. (Source: www.usccb.org) 7 CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING What is an Active Parishioner? Our parishioners are often asking us to verify that they are an “active practicing Catholic.” The question of parishioner status is important because this question comes up in many circumstances such as Certification as godparents/ sponsors for Baptisms and Confirmation Active parishioner tuition rates in Catholic schools Marriage/Baptism preparation Scheduling of the facilities for services such as Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals Enrolling children in our programs In practice, Parishioner verification is done by looking equally at three criteria: Registration, Regular Mass Attendance, and Financial and Time Support. If you have any questions regarding the parishioner verification process, please contact Molly Kerr at mkerr@ctking.com. Msgr. Frank McNamee encourages you to be an active member of our parish. Your parish – and your own faith life – is enriched and strengthened by the participation of our members!
