August 21, 2016 Twenty-first Sunday of ordinary time My friends in Christ, One of the greatest attributes of the Cathedral is our Music Program. Johann Sebastian Bach stated “The final aim and reason of all music is the glorification of God and the refreshment of the spirit.” The beautiful music at our weekend Masses and special liturgies certainly upholds this statement. Our spirits are lifted and our prayers enhanced by the varied music offered at our Masses. Over 200 volunteers are involved in our 10 choirs, lending their talents in praise of God. 2699 Peachtree Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30305 404-233-2145 www.cathedralofchristtheking.org WHAT’S INSIDE: VIRTUS (Child Safety Training) Page 2 Children’s Ministry Page 3 Young Church Page 4 20/30 Somethings Page 5 Over the last twenty years, our parish has experienced tremendous growth but our music staff has not increased. Daily, they are working miracles to continue one of the finest Cathedral music programs in the nation. I thank all our music staff for their continued energy and commitment to the program. Now, with the help of our own staff as well as outside experts, we are in the process of restructuring and amending the Music Department. This will allow us to preserve and grow the incredible program we have presently. We will hire a full-time assistant organist who will, among other tasks, help direct and coordinate the Youth Music program. As we move forward with this plan, I thank our music staff and all the volunteers who continually create the joyful and uplifting musical settings for our liturgies. With their help, our treasured asset, the Music Program of the Cathedral, will continue to bless us for years and years to come. It is the hope of Archbishop Gregory to continue to give clergy, staff and volunteers the tools needed to build a loving and safe place for all God’s Children to grow in faith. All NEW volunteers working with children and vulnerable individuals are required to complete an in-person course “Protecting God’s Children” prior to volunteering. Our next Cathedral offerings will take place in Kenny Hall on Tuesday, August 23rd, 6 pm-9 pm, Saturday, September 17th, 9 am-12pm, Thursday, September 22nd, 6 pm–9pm, Thursday, September 29th, 9am-12pm. Visit the Safe Environment website at www.archatl.com to register for the class. Any volunteers needing rescreening (last background check completed 5 or more years ago) are also required to complete this training. Only adults 18 and older are to attend and must arrive ON TIME to receive credit for the training. Stewardship of Treasure One Minute Reflections “For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last” (Luke 13:30). With those words Jesus makes it clear to us that there are no lines, no privileges in heaven. Our faith, the Lord, our sense of stewardship repeatedly remind us that what we think is important on earth may not be important in heaven at all. There is a Greek proverb that says, “Being first is good, but being last is perfect.” We are all called to discipleship and we need to answer that call. As the summer season begins to come to an end many of us look towards the start of a new academic year. We also are reminded of the new beginnings of our church year. Our annual procession of faith from Ordinary time through Advent and Christmas followed by winter’s darkness and Lent culminating in the great feasts of Easter are signals and signs of our spiritual passage as well. At this time of new beginnings Christ the King encourages all to participate in this great procession by becoming part of one of the many ministries that make the Cathedral such a rich community of faith. On the weekend of August 27th and 28th our Liturgical Ministries (Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Ushers, Altar Servers, and Flower, Wedding and Sacristan’s Guilds) will be seeking new members to help support the solemnity and beauty of our Masses. The Cathedral Parish is rich in the diversity of its members and is enriched by the wealth of its ministry opportunities. We encourage and welcome those willing to share their gifts and their talents with the great parish family that is Christ the King. Come see us after all the Masses on the weekend of August 27 and 28. THANK YOU! A special thank you to the Cathedral family for the generosity to our “STOCK THE FOOD PANTRY” food drive. Due to your donations, SVDP can continue the Corporal Work of Mercy of feeding the hungry. The food pantry serves those in the CTK parish community and in the area experiencing hardship and hunger due to illness, unemployment and income. 5 CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING WWW.CATHEDRALOFCHRISTTHEKING.ORG Adult education/rcia Helen Young • 404-233-2145 x439 • hyoung@ctking.com The Cathedral Flower Guild is seeking sponsors for the weekly altar flowers.
