We have journeyed for 50 days from Easter Sunday to today – Pentecost actually means 50th. On the 50th day after Passover the Jews celebrated a thanksgiving feast for the barley harvest. They also remembered the giving of the covenant to Noah after the flood and Moses receiving the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. The early Christians remembered the giving of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles and to the Church on the first Christian Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles as tongues of fire and with a loud wind. At that moment the Church was born. The Apostles were so on fire with the Spirit of Jesus that they immediately went out and preached the good news. There were literally thousands of people who came into the church in those early days. Two thousand years later God wants to continuously ignite a spiritual fire within Church. I am reading a book by Matthew Kelly called The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic. He suggests that the Holy Spirit can ignite a fire within each of us by doing four simple things: 1 Spend ten minutes each day in prayerful conversation with God. 2 Read five pages of a great Catholic book each day. 3 Give 1 percent more of your income to support the mission of your parish than you gave last year. 4 Do one thing each week to share the genius of Catholicism with someone else (i.e., a Catholic article, a Catholic book, a Catholic CD or a Catholic DVD). In this way, we all can do our own personal best to ignite the fire of the Holy Spirit within Our Lady of Fatima Parish and among San Clemente Catholics today!
