facebook.com/IHMatlanta @IHMatl Dear friends in the Lord, This last Thursday was the memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes, named by St. John Paul II as World Day of the Sick. It seems an apt time for a few words about the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. The Parish Office will be closed on Monday, February 15 in observance of President’s Day. If you are my age or older, you learned about Anointing of the Sick under its medieval name, Extreme Unction, which suggested a ministration at the very end of life—hence the sacrament’s unfortunate, morbid nickname, “last rites.” The Second Vatican Council desired to restore the sacrament’s biblical character as a sacrament of healing. “Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up” (James 5:14). One consequence of this renewed understanding is that Anointing of the Sick should be celebrated at the onset of serious illness, when the sick can consciously benefit from its healing graces. The sacrament should never be postponed intentionally until the moment of death as a “last rite.” Because only priests anoint in our Catholic tradition, the declining number of priests has impacted this sacrament especially. Whereas 50 years ago a rectory might have been full of priests ready to respond in an instant to an emergency call, today that rectory (like our own) often houses just one or two. And while every priest regards ministry to the gravely ill and dying as a number one priority, it can still be a matter of days—not minutes!—before he is able to administer the Sacrament of Anointing. He may be presiding at a wedding or a funeral; he may be anointing someone else; he may be out of town; or sometimes he may simply be at home ill himself. Calling for the Sacrament when there is plenty of time to spare almost always leads to a result more agreeable to the patient, the family and the priest alike. Please join me in asking the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes for all our sick. May she and her Son, our Divine Physician, keep them close to their hearts. To reserve a spot in this discussion group, and a copy of the book, please contact Drew Denton in the church office. During the season of Lent, you will notice the Book of Elect displayed in the niche near the baptismal font. This book contains the names of those who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil. Please pray for all the young people and adults who have written their names in this book. And give thanks that, through the waters of baptism, God has called you by name as well.
