Dear friends in the Lord,
This last Thursday was the memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes, named by St.
John Paul II as World Day of the Sick. It seems an apt time for a few words
about the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.

The Parish Office will be closed on
Monday, February 15 in observance of
President’s Day.
If you are my age or older, you learned about Anointing of the Sick under its
medieval name, Extreme Unction, which suggested a ministration at the very end of
life—hence the sacrament’s unfortunate, morbid nickname, “last rites.”
The Second Vatican Council desired to restore the sacrament’s biblical character as a
sacrament of healing. “Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters
of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of
the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise
him up” (James 5:14). One consequence of this renewed understanding is that
Anointing of the Sick should be celebrated at the onset of serious illness, when the
sick can consciously benefit from its healing graces. The sacrament should never be
postponed intentionally until the moment of death as a “last rite.”
Because only priests anoint in our Catholic tradition, the declining number of priests
has impacted this sacrament especially. Whereas 50 years ago a rectory might have
been full of priests ready to respond in an instant to an emergency call, today that
rectory (like our own) often houses just one or two. And while every priest regards
ministry to the gravely ill and dying as a number one priority, it can still be a matter
of days—not minutes!—before he is able to administer the Sacrament of Anointing.
He may be presiding at a wedding or a funeral; he may be anointing someone else;
he may be out of town; or sometimes he may simply be at home ill himself. Calling
for the Sacrament when there is plenty of time to spare almost always leads to a
result more agreeable to the patient, the family and the priest alike.
Please join me in asking the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes for all our sick.
May she and her Son, our Divine Physician, keep them close to their hearts.
Your brother in Christ’s word and work,

service, we continue the work of Jesus.

If you knew you could help save a life, would you? From February 10 through
March 20, you’re invited to join thousands of other Christians for “40 Days for
Life” – 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. You’re also invited

Looking for a way to deepen your spiritual life during Lent? Consider one of the
following reading groups that begin this week:
Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive
Join us as we discuss the book prepared for the recent World Meeting of Families
in Philadelphia. We will meet the first five Sundays of Lent, beginning February
14, from 10:15 to 11:15, in the library of IHM School. To reserve a spot and a
copy of the book, please register at http://ihmatlanta.org/adult-faith-formation.
Jesus: A Pilgrimage
Walk in the footsteps of Jesus this Lent and bear witness to his resurrection this
Easter, with Jesuit priest and bestselling author James Martin as your guide. His
vivid memoir invites readers, in the tradition of Ignatian spirituality, to place
themselves in the scenes of Jesus’ life and thereby journey deeper into the
meaning of the Gospel. Our weekly discussions will focus on selections of the
book that encourage us deeper into the lessons of the Lent and Easter seasons.
To reserve a spot in this discussion group, and a copy of the book, please contact
Drew Denton in the church office.
During the season of Lent, you will notice the Book of Elect displayed in the
niche near the baptismal font. This book contains the names of those who will be
baptized at the Easter Vigil. Please pray for all the young people and adults who
have written their names in this book. And give thanks that, through the waters of
baptism, God has called you by name as well.
Classes resume for all grades this
weekend February 13- 14 and
Wednesday, February 17.
First Communion Parent Meeting:
February 16
Mark your calendars! A meeting for parents of First Communion candidates,
including IHM School students, will take place at 7:00 on February 16, in the
church. At least one parent of each student should plan to attend.
For GIFT students, preparation sessions for First Communion will take place on
March 1, March 15, and March 29, 6:30-8:00 pm. The Rehearsal and Day of
Reflection will be on April 16, 9:00-12:30. Further details will be provided at the
parent meeting.
Children will receive their first Holy Communion at regular Mass times on the
weekend of April 30-May 1.
