The Miracle
Of Understanding
Dear Parish Family,
The story of Pentecost in the Acts of the Apostles describes a remarkable scene. The gathered
crowd, speaking many different languages, suddenly understands both the disciples and each other.
The crowd is not only divided by language but also by politics, economics, and religion. Some groups
are long-standing enemies.
You will notice in the story that it does not say that the disciples or the crowd suddenly became
remarkable linguists. Rather, the story tells us that even though they spoke different languages they
understood one another. Even though they were from so many different towns and nations and some
were old enemies and rivals, they suddenly understood one another.
Right here in our parish community we speak many different languages. It is not uncommon to hear
English, Spanish, Italian, Polish, and many others spoken by members of our community. Sometimes
these languages enrich us. But when we don’t understand the language of another it can divide us. And
there are other kinds of languages spoken here which can also enrich or divide: There is the language
of the young and the language of the old, the language of the poor and the language of the wealthy, the
language of singles and the language of couples, the language or parents and the language of teenagers.
I am sure you get the idea. We have all had the experience in families and workplaces of feeling that,
from the response of our audience, we might as well be speaking a foreign language. The temptation,
of course, is to think that I alone speak clearly — everyone else needs a hearing aid!
The miracle of Pentecost is a miracle of understanding. It seems to come so naturally to the gathered
crowd that day. They receive it as an unexpected gift. Sometimes we too suddenly understand others.
Other times we need to work at it. Understanding begins with the desire to understand and to be one
with all those seemingly different people who surround us.
If Pentecost is the birthday, the beginning of the church, then the church begins with understanding.
The church begins wherever people are and wherever understanding happens. It begins in families,
among nations, and among the many cultures, orientations, ways of life, and stages of life that
surround us. Understanding is a gift of love. It stands against
all that divides us.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

Summer is Coming - Get That Tent Ready
There is nothing like the first warm day of spring to turn our thoughts to the
return of summer! This year we will have something very special to look
forward to: the return of the Sacred Heart End of Summer Tent Party! I have
heard so much about this historic SHJM event and I am delighted that Pat Corrigan and Joan Heinz
have graciously offered to chair the party. This year our party will honor Mary Steinbrecher, one of
the party’s most enthusiastic supporters over many years. Mary passed away this past fall but not
before encouraging all of us to renew this event as a way for the parish and community to come
together and celebrate our wonderful parish and the joys of summer in Southampton.
Upcoming Events
August 31st for our Summer Party under the Tent.
Tent Party Committee Meeting
Parish Center
May 23 - 10 AM
Anyone wishing to help out with the Summer Tent Party is invited to attend.

winner will now be 1 in 50 instead of 1 in 200 as in the past.
Tickets will still be $100 and you can purchase them on you own or take
a chance or chances with a group of friends to increase your chances of
winning.
Anyone wishing to join the committee in selling chances before and
after Mass to please contact: Charlie Mottern—631-283-3785. We
especially need some volunteers for the 5 PM Masses on Saturday and

You can make a difference in the lives of those around us
by making a gift to this year’s Catholic Ministries Appeal
Every Gift Counts!
A gift of $25 may help pay the gas for a Meals On Wheels van to deliver food for a day.
Catholic Ministries Appeal
A gift of $50 from an emergency fund may help pay the electric bill in a cold winter

By Juan J.
